Baler Salvage Yards in the Midwest

I tried out my new to me IHC 445 baler yesterday. After washing and greasing all parts, I started feeding hay to it by hand. Baled 1st bale ok then the driveland twisted in to. I think the carrier bearing froze up or something. Made a mess.
Im looking for a driveline if anyone knows of one or a baler salvage yard, preferably in the midwest somewhere. It's a pretty heavy duty driveline it appears. Thanks for any help. Bob

If the twisted in two happened because there was a internal mechanical jamb, or there was already compressed hay thrown in, it will twist up a second shaft as well. A slip clutch or shear pin should limit drive torque to a safe level. If the issue is a bad drive line component, and there was no excessive load, just replacing it should not be difficult, The parts are probably not unique to a model, or are easily substituted for. Drive line companies can help find stock, or make what you need. Make sure the shear or slip clutch are working. A slip clutch that has not slipped for a year can be stuck and over torque easily. to fix requires taking it loose and oplishing rusty surfaces so they can slip. If a shear pin, putting a grade 8 bolt in place of a grade 5 can also do it. If the shaft was OK before it broke, look for the reason. Jim

Bob, the 'midwest' is a pretty big place but I would ask if you have any sort of Amish community(s) within a days drive. As you may or may not know, they will remove the driveline and install a stationery engine. therefore someone may have knowledge of your driveline laying around in the corner of a barn somewhere. Most of those guys are partial to New Hollands tho so your International could be a bit of a challenge but worth a try. this avenue was successful for me but I have a New Holland.

Howdy Bob,

Here are a couple of 445's in salvage that may have the parts you are looking for:

Just an fyi, the baler had sat in an open front shed for 20+ years since last being used. The baler is slick, but a little rust down the chute. Not bad at all, but there.

What I noticed today, that I didn't check or notice yesterday, is that the two bale pressure handles were cranked way down. Probably baled prairie hay last and needed it cranked down to make a decent bale. I believe it was way too tight and I was feeding it too heavy. It has a shear bolt clutch system that should have sheared. I'll look into that.

Thanks for the possible salvage yards. What I need is the carrier bearing, the bearing housing, and the back part of the housing from the bearing back. The shaft that bolts to the flywheel is fine as well as the front short shaft. Bob

You didn't say where you are at. Call Bowie Equipment in Tipton, Ia.563-886-6946 Or call Kelsem Salvage in Waterloo, Ia. 349-296-2236

Very nice looking 440 baler.
If twisted part of drive shaft is round tubing that can be replaced with used/new tubing & utilizing old parts such as splined shaft & sleeve.

It's a regular hitch. It is pinned into the road position which is why it probably looks close. Bob
