Hydraulic fluid

How full should my hydraulic fluid be? I dont see any sight glass and the chain that attached to bottom of breather cap is missing.

If it's a stand alone hydraulic tank, not a part of the transmission case, and no sight glass or
dipstick, then generally a couple inches below the filler is a good rule of thumb.

That is determined with the oil up to operating temperature, and all cylinders in the retracted
position.

If the system howls with air when cylinders are extended, add more. If it pushes oil out the
breather, let it find it's own level.

Just generic information. If there are directions in the manual, follow those.

Many old tractors have a level check plug somewhere on the side. Flii to where the oil starts to run out.On a eperate tank(like on a log splitter) fill to a couple inches or so from
the top.If you are talking H/M farmall, they hold a total of about 6 qts. If it runs out,it's too full. If it sucks air,you need to add more.As said,we need to know what you are
working on???

ey sorry its a Massey Ferguson 20 and I just got it. Still trying to learn about this thing, I wish I knew how to upload a picture of it so I could get some advoce

For my IH 2606 that has the fill plug on top and the side plug fill level, I made a dip stick out of wood and marked the level. Then got a broken tape measure and did the same. Had to slide in at an angle to miss the gears and make sure it was hitting bottom. Also made a mark for when I overfilled it by 5 gallons. Wood dipstick will let you see the oil (for water, etc.) and also see if you have any sludge show up on the bottom of the stick. You can add a round magnet on the drain plug to collect metal parts and also run a flexible magnet tool (every mechanic has one) down through the top.

Anymore I take a magic marker and write all relevant information on a tractor, mower, etc. on the wall by the door of the barn. Filters, belts, oil volume, type, etc. and even do it for various weed chemical mixes. Don't have to dig around for manuals that way.

Post your question down on the Massey Ferguson Forum (include the loader model as well as the tractor model, if you know it). I seem to remember someone posting dimensions for the chain/dipstick a while back but haven't found the post. Someone there might see it and have the info you need.
