Did you know that a Ford 4500 backhoe can hold 6+ gallons of water in the transmission??? And still drive?? Did you know the rear end holds over 6 gallons of oil, but will still work with less than one gallon of fudge looking crap in it?? Now you know.

Maybe in Alabama but in South Dakota mid winter it will not work with that much water in the transmission.

That one gallon of oil isnt good for planetaries. Oil proably made brakes work better. If that low I would watch the brake boots for leaks.

When I bought a Jubilee, the transmission and hydraulic sump had water. Transmission shifter boot leaked and transmission was full of water.

Best reason to keep tractors inside and to change fluids.

And there is still water trapped in there that didn't drain out!

Probably take several changes to clean it up. In the mean time, you can try cracking the drain plug and letting any settled water out after it sits a few days.

I picked up a Jubilee last year in Oklahoma. After I got home we had a cold snap and the water froze which is how I learned about the leak.
Seen it in many old tractors. Glad they were built tough.

Water in the hydraulic sump caused my controls to freeze up. Control levers were rusted. Couldn't drain all water. I had to remove lift cover and use rags to get all the water.
Lesson learned, keep tractors inside.

So by that in theory you can run water . Grab an old dictionary and itll say hydraulics is to do with water and no mention of oil . I remember reading that in grade school thinking that cant be right

In the early 80's at GM Hydra-Matic, as part of the new environmentally friendly manufacturing, process engineering bought machines to creat blind splines on the input shaft for, 4T60 and then 4T60-E transmissions. These machines used progressive dies, under a ram that used water based hydraulics. What a nightmare!
