Tax free non bio #2 near western WI border?

All,

I am looking to buy some non-bio diesel #2 for use in a diesel powered small tractor. I am looking for a small amount, probably using 5 gallon cans to (eventually) fill a 55 drum.

Is there someplace in WI, near the MN border around the Twin cities area ( I94) that would sell small amounts? MN has bio-components mixed in...

Thanks in advance,

D.

There's a truckstop at Hudson WI. There are probably some local distributors around there also. Look in the phone book or online for local fuel companies. As for the non bio thing most states have required amounts that have to be in most fuels now. Don't worry about it for summer use anyway. I could not tell you if it is in mine I buy and have never had a problem with it from where I get fuel in MI. Buy about a thousand gallon a year.

Dennis,

I believe that all diesel fuel is now low sulfur by federal mandate. The sulfur component used to add a injector pump lubrication property to the fuel. The small % of bio now mandated will provide that lubrication to the pump. Our Minnesota diesel used in the winter has a much lower % of bio than the summer blend. Son and I run 15+ tractor and truck diesel engines in winter and summer. Oldest one is 1968 vintage, newest is 2020, none give us any problem with the bio fuel. 10+ years ago we had problems with bio diesel, but that seems to be a non issue now.

you want what is typically labeled (in WI at least) as "off road" fuel. It is dyed red and is for off road use only... tractors, generators, etc

if DOT finds the red fuel in an on road truck, there are big fines involved.

The sulfur has nothing to do with the lubricity of the fuel. It's the PROCESS of removing the sulfur that also removes some of the lubricity of the fuel. Federal and State laws mandate that additives be put in the fuel to replace the lost lubricity.

Bio does not have the same shortcoming. It is low sulfur AND has all the lubricity. Makes a great lubricity additive.

So what's your problem with bio? Folks have been using straight bio and even straight waste vegetable oil in older mechanical diesels with great results for a very long time. Bio works just like regular diesel.
