Oliver generator....Update.....

I took my generator and regulator to my shop that rebuilt them last year and he put everything on his stand and worked fine-
13.2 volts(or so). Brought it home yesterday and put it back on...started up and amp gage showed charge- needle fluctuates up and
down...increased the rpms to about 900-1000 and belt starts chattering and gage is on 0...used my meter on battery while running
and shows 12.2 at battery; ran about 1 minute(belt squalling) so shut it off and front of genny is hot and case is hot: ?

OK, after examining you picture, it appears to be wired correctly as 3 terminal VR ..So, I'm on board with looking into bearing.

If I were there or it was mine, I would remove belt and if it spins freely by hand, then I would jumper BATT to ARM and see if it motors. If motors, speed should change when Field wire is connected vs disconnected while motoring. That ought to verify gen & field contacts of VR . I know, this was already done at shop, but today is a new day. Or you can ignore me. :)

I am no generator wizard by any means but I just do not see how anything that goes on electrically inside a generator like this one create enough resistance to lock it up and smoke the belt. The bearing is the only thing I can think of that can do this. But I could be wrong.

omething like this might lock an armature....but this is a starter. Gen shop repaired this!

so I took off the belt- wires still hooked to generator and ran a jumper from battery to A and it sparks but does not turn-
tried to turn by hand while jumper is on it and it is tight or froze with jumper on- spins freely with jumper not hooked to it.

hat is a new one on me. A WAG might be that there is field current and no armature current, but??? I have asked worn out to chime in & hopefully he has something to add.

ell, it is not new to me anymore.....I got off my arse, went to shop, separated field from armature and applied current to field only while hand turning pulley & it turns out that my WAG was dead on. Power to field only locks up armature. So, you have a connection problem, bad brush to commutator connection or just a bad armature. Time to return it to your rebuilder for a look see.

I would have thought the electrical shop would have caught it if there was still a bearing issue, only comment I have there is if shop has a direct-drive generator test bench it would not "side-load" the front bearing like your tractor's belt belt does and some oddball bearing problem might not show up. (Possibly worn shaft or bearing bore, for example, probably unlikely but possible.)

How about the drive belt and generator pulley, if belt is too narrow for pulley and/or pulley is worn out belt will bottom out and slip easily under the load of charging.

Since the grounded armature brush receives it's ground thru the case, a missing case ground would cause this, but since gen case is bolted to engine in 3 places, this bad ground seems unlikely to me.

I replaced the 6V Genny with a 12V Genny...and battery...so this one sets forward about a 1/2 so belt is a little out of line
but not bad I dont think. New belt- good pulley...grounded well..I guess I will call the shop in the morning and see what he
thinks now...thanks for the help guys! BJM
