3020 Diesel fuel shut-off help needed!

So the other day I was parking out 1964 JD3020 and when I pulled the shut-off knob/rod out to shut er down, the knob and rod pulled right out of the hand throttle! It took 6 days of soaking the steering wheel center hub and a lot of struggling with a gear pulled to get the wheel off the shaft. Now I cant get the handle throttle collar off of the steering column. Yes, I removed the 9/16 bolt on the throttle side of the collar and the little plug on the opposite side and still cant get the two parts to slide apart. At this point I just want to hook up a fuel shut-off knob down closer to the fuel injection pump like on the 3010 diesels. I spent $94 on a 3 thick shop manual from John Deere specifically for the 3000 series tractors and there isnt any information anywhere in the manual that shows how the fuel shut-off knob on the steering column shuts off the fuel/tractor. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I may be wrong but as I understand it, the knob doesn't shut the fuel off (at least not directly). Pulling the knob out releases a stop, allowing the lever to travel further to the left, past the idle position, which causes the throttle linkage to move the pump lever to shut off the fuel. There is a snap ring at the column end of the knob rod that holds internal parts on the knob rod. If the rod came out, it is likely the snap ring came off. Item key # 4 on the page (link attached). The Operator's manual tells about pulling the knob and moving the lever left for shut down of the diesel.

Yes, pulling the knob out after contacting the right stop and then moving the throttle lever further to the right will increase the allowed engine speed. On at least some of the diesels it activated the fuel shutoff. From an Operator's manual:

I think Jim is right. The parts book is your friend and consider your tractor's serial number. Regarding diesel shutdown, it seems John Deere could not settle on a method. Some models used a pull-out cable attached to the pump, others used the throttle lever method and still others used an electrical connection from the key switch to the pump.

Override knob is for both higher engine rpm's for faster road transport speed & shutting engine off by moving linkage on inj pump to fuel cut-off position.
 
So where/how does the linkage from the knob on
the column connect to the injection pump and shut
off the engine? I only see one mechanism on the
back side of the pump that controls the engine
rpms. That mechanism is also controlled by the
foot throttle.

The knob does not connect to the pump, it just releases the throttle lever to travel further. The lever moves the linkage back to the pump which can shut it off or increase speed depending if the lever is moved beyond the stop to the left or right. The pedal operates the same throttle linkage for speed between idle and normal high idle.
 
The stop the knob moves is right inside the hub below the steering wheel. The parts, connected to the knob, are shown on the parts page I gave you the link to.
 

Due to the fact that your tractors throttle handle knob with shaft stays in throttle handle held in place by E-clip there's no need or reason to disassemble throttle assembly any further!!

In his first post I understood the knob and rod pulled out of the hand throttle (lever). If that is what happened he would need to disassemble to put that back together, wouldn't he?

I wonder how he has been shutting it off prior to this, if it doesn't have a separate shut off cable or and electric solenoid?
 
The knob and pin pulled out of my 4020 just like that years ago. Never did fix it. I'm just being careful not to throttle down to far when not trying to turn it off. And watching the RPMs on the high side.

Is there something jamming on yours keeping it from going all the way up for shutoff?
