Removing decals

I got the rusty spears off of the 1550 side panels today. They are pretty rusty and bent up, have a better set from a 1750 I think Ill use instead. Any good way to remove the old decals before painting the spears? I thought about using a heat gun to loosen them, not sure thats the way to go, any suggestions?

If they are really dried out and brittle, sandpaper works pretty good.

They use fishing line on cars and trucks ,just use a sawing action to cut through the adhesive back.

Used spray on oven cleaner to remove decals on the
race car.
