John Deere B front bolts.

I have a 1948 John Deere B that I just bought a few months ago and I am in the middle of restoring it. I noticed on the front bumper that there should be two bolts sticking out, but there is only one. What are they for, where can I buy another one, and how do I put it in.

Thanks.

The bolts were probably for a cultivator. Just remove the existing one and put a cork in the holes. That's the way they came from the factory.

Those studs were for the front ramp-type cultivator mounting bracket.
A lot of people had a hole drilled in the bracket so they could use it as a front hitch for backing wagons.

Ok, that makes sense.

The reason I was curious was because I am trying to find a way to put front weights on it for pulling. I read that those go on the front on those studs. Is there a better way I could put weights on the front of it?

The top holes take 5/8 x 1-1/2 cap screws.
The bottom holes take 5/8 x 2-1/4 studs and special 5/8 nuts.

The front bumper is the steering pedestal. If you want to put hanging weights on the pedestal you could
bolt a length of 3/8x2x2 angle iron to the pedestal using the bottom holes.

Front weight brackets for Bs are usually built to attach onto the side rails and extend ahead 10-20 inches depending on what local rules allow. They are usually built of 3/8 x 4 inch bar stock. The thickness of the steel is governed by how far beyond the front of the tractor it will extend.
