Seed corn for ear picking

I want to plant about 5 acers of corn to be harvested with a mounted corn picker. What kind of seed can I get that will produce a large ear?
It will be planted on 38 inch rows. It will be fertilized and sprayed for weed control. Thanks

Most hybrids will produce a large ear. Too low of a population will encourage the plant to throw more than one ear, and too high of a population will produce smaller ears but a higher overall yield. Check with your local agbusiness for the appropriate seed.

Check with your seed dealers to see if they have any corn for ear picking. Most all of the corn nowadays shells easy and does so on the snapping rolls.

Id ask your local seed dealers about picking corn. Most corn around here is way over my head now days. When mounted pickers were designed corn was not nearly as tall as it is now days. Not sure if that will affect picking or not but it may be worth some thought.

Today's corn is all bred for a combine and will shell very bad at the rolls on a mounted picker. I parked my Deere 237 mounted picker and got a 300 pull type because I felt it would shell less corn. The Allis Chalmers 170-190 pickers and the IH 234's used deck plates over the rolls to help with shelling. I would sort of like to find a 234 with brackets for a Deere 3020 someday. I have a crib of ear corn that we are hoping to shell out next week. Tom

The most common cause of excessive shelling is that most pick when the corn is too dry these days. You should pick ear corn at around 25% or even more and let it dry in the crib. At 20% or less the shelling gets bad. The size of the ear makes less difference unless they are so small they go through the rollers.

I used to plant a silage hybrid that I got from Pioneer, it was cheaper and picked easily with my 1PR. The last few years I have been just harvesting some of my cousins modern hybrid on very narrow rows with the same 1PR and it works just fine. I bounce a few ears over the snouts due to the height of todays plants, but its not real bad. Like others have said , pick at 25% plus to minimize shelling and it also helps to husk better at higher moisture.
