AAA Auto 'club'.

We we are thinking of 'joining' Rocky Mountain AAA. Are they as good as I hear? Free towing;Free 'rescues'; plos numerous other benefits/discounts.It would be nice to have while we travel around to tractor events. Even for local stuff, too.Any comments?Good;bad;scam....

Check with your vehicle insurance.

Most, if not all, of the benefits of AAA might be included in your insurance.

I held membership in AAA's branch, the Carolina Motor Club for several years when I was in the Marine Corps. I only used it once, and that benefit was less than the total membership fees I'd paid.

Be careful. I had the RV overage and my SUV broke down. When AAA found the trailer was hauling household goods they refused service for either the trailer or the SUV and charged me for responding to an noncovered vehicle. They claimed they only cover vehicles towing RV trailers.

I used them for years and the last three I got back most of my fees. Flat tires m towing, battery charging, locked car lost keys, . All covered. great service

RWK: Maybe I'm not reading your reply correctly. RV coverage as in a motorhome or maybe a holiday trailer? So your SUV was towing a cargo trailer of some kind with household goods (whatever those are) inside or on the trailer. And your SUV broke down and they refused to deal with the SUV or the trailer right? Is that what happened?

Yes, my SUV was towing a small ( 4X8 ) trailer which we had household goods ( moving to a new house ) and they refused coverage. Here they sell RV coverage as covering full size vans, SUVs, and pickups that often tow trailers and say coverage is for vehicle and / or trailer breakdowns. When this happened they said because we were moving we weren't using the vehicle for recreation.

Have it. Mostly for the wifes peace of mind. Last time she needed a tow, AAA was at the bottom of the list. It was over 12 hours before she got a call from the driver.

It took me a few hours to get there, but had already pulled her out.

I have had AAA for about 15yrs. It works very well and both our daughters now have it also. They have saved my butt several times. Ran out of gas in the middle of the night in a heavy snowstorm in NW Iowa (kinda stupid on my part, but long story).....guy came out with 5gal. Moving our daughter from Oregon to Chicago.....trans went out of their Subaru.....I was driving a Penske rental truck.....neither vehicle actually covered by AAA but I was a member and after several calls, they towed the Subaru and got us to car rental at airport to continue trip.

When it works it works well. My area was a dry hole for a long time they now have a good local contractor. I have been a member for 35 years I was a contractor for 12 years. When I threw in the towel I was broke with a worn out tow truck. If members patronize your business its a win win when they don't you are working for peanuts.

It was a life saver for me when my kids went off to collage they were 55 miles away I had AAA tow it to me I kept working did not have to lose a day going after their car. My daughter has had numerous flats AAA has always worked well. The last time she was 200 miles away I used the 100 free tow. I hooked up my trailer and meet them at the 100 mile mark. Its a long story about why the flat had to be towed I can say the AAA was great I gave him a nice tip...

I tell folks I hope you don't need it but if you do you have someone to beach at it it goes bad... Tow trucks can charge all they can get with AAA you have some protection.

I have AAA Plus.

Don't use it much but nice to get a 100 mile tow if you need it.
I like to travel. Who are you going to call if you are out of town in the middle of nowhere?

Had AAA for a couple of years. Only used it once. They sent a rollback, and the first thing they did was ask for money. I had to pay for the tow because I was home. AAA only covered towing if I was stranded away from home.

Didn't renew after that. Truck died again on the highway. I called the dealer. They gave me the number of their preferred tow service. Called the tow service. They came and towed my truck to the dealer. Dealer passed on their discount for the tow to me.

Barny ..... sounds liie you expected a tow from home to maybe a shop. I've never heard of that, why did you think that was part of the package I'm wondering?

I used them back in the late '50's. Looks like they stood the test of time.....definition of a quality product. I rejoined just this year as I am older and may have situations where I need some road assistance. For the price, You could cut out one cup of coffee a day or two and pay for it.

I have towing insurance, through auto insurance. Have used it one time, wife's Edge would not turn over,(old and bad battery). After sitting on charge and trying to jump start with truck, could not get it to turn over. I spent more time on the phone, getting a tow, than it would have taken me to drive to town and returned with a battery. But by then I was determined to cash in on the service paid for. Rollback finally got there and I knew the driver. He got the car to my repair guy with no problem. The next time I needed a tow my truck popped a brake line, I went through an argument with the dispatcher (if you could call them that) they wanted to send a service from 50 miles away and after waiting for a long time, I called them off, filled the master cylinder and drove to repair service. Might have an interesting claim if i had wrecked.
As for AAA I could NOT get an answer if they would or would NOT tow my truck with a bumper pull trailer with tractor. I donot want to pay for something that will not provide the service I need. SO your call!! joe

I will NEVER use them again! They had my '97 Dodge Ram van on a rollback and when they dropped it off, I got to working on it and found they had wrapped a chain around the rear axle and broke a brake line. Fortunately I found it and fixed it before road testing it. I called them during regular hours to complain and told them I was almost killed by their non caring driver. Said they could do nothing about that! They offered me some cash, I suggested they take it out of the drivers cut, said they could not. How is he going to know/care if it does not hurt! NEVER again!

I had them for years with my/their car insurance. used them several times-no complaints. I did keep the number of the best AAA wrecker service in town with me and always called them, though. smaller rinky dinky outfits contracted to them always 8itched when called because the rates were preset. I dropped AAA insurance -their rates were sky high. I get the same service from farm bureau ins.

I was in Deadwood SD. Had a tire go flat over night in the hotel parking lot. So I called AAA. Told them where i was. They kept asking if I was close to Denver. I said no I'm in Deadwood, South Dakota. (another minus was I had to spell Deadwood for them) They said they couldn't find anyone in Deadwood to fix it. But they could send someone in 3 hours from another town. After a confusing 15 minute call. I just said forget it. Called a local tire shop, had a guy there in 15 minutes. Took the tire off, to the shop, repaired, back on in less than 45 minutes. Less than $50. Will not renew membership, No need for AAA me.

We have it. Got it for my daughter when they moved to Waukegan, IL and didn't want to have to worry about a breakdown on the freeway. We were driving there a lot too so we got it for us. Then she moved to Florida. We drove there a lot. Have never used it. If we have a problem locally there is always one of us or friends who could bring gas, etc. I can change a tire blind folded but the women can't.

Have towing and road side assistance with State Farm. But you have to pay up front and get reimbursed later. They have a limit on towing so it wouldn't cover much of it if we were stuck out in the sticks somewhere (such as Delta, lol but then I'd call you) If you go to Denver or the Springs much then it might be worth it. If you are driving the boons in Colorado then you might wait a while for a wrecker to get there from one of the major towns. Also I don't think it will cover you if out 4 wheeling over Mosquito pass or taking the back road to St. Elmo from the west. Not sure if they would cover you if hauling stuff for the farm so be sure to ask.
