Oliver 88 generator

I put a different motor in my 88, it came with a 12 volt generator. I fired it up this afternoon for the first time. Amp guage was showing discharge instead of charge. I polarized the generator and when I started it again, the needle showed discharge for a couple of seconds and then went to charging. I shut it off and the needle went to discharge. I unhooked the battery and hooked it back up and the needle was on 0. I then was hooking up the radiator and when my hand bumped the generator case, it was quite warm to the touch. I tried to start it but it would barely turn over. I disconnected the ground cable and it sparked when I took it off. Now what should I do??

This is with the motor shut off

This is running

Took the cover off of the voltage regulator to see what it looks like. Where do I go from here??

the contacts in the regulator are stuck closed ,..going to discharge when shut off is the clue. i got used to watching the amp needle at shut down.

I have had a fair amount of luck tightening the spring on the points to get them to pull apart but sometimes when I do that the points dont want to close when the engine is started.

an not be certain from picture, but cut out contacts look to be open, but I question the wiring? See no connection to left most terminal.

I noticed that empty terminal too. Could it be the load terminal that is just not being used?

ould be, as we can not see back or rear sides for possible 4th terminal.

I cant tell from the picture but there's a chance that VR isn't wired correct ??

If its a 4 Terminal and has the GEN/ARM underneath, the Gennys ARM post is what wires to it and the 3 terminals side by side up top are BAT LOAD and FLD (wires to gennys FLD post) not necessarily in that order. A 4 terminal can still work with NO connection to its LOAD terminal if those loads are fed instead off the VR's BAT terminal or the Load side of the ammeter. A heavy discharge when the tractor is shut off could be a stuck Cutout Relay. IM NOT SURE IF TIS WIRED CORRECT ??? Maybe the VR's LOAD terminal is wired to the ammeter instead of the correct BAT terminal ???

For a 4 terminal VR: BAT to Load (NOT battery/starter) side of Ammeter,,,,,,,,,,,GEN/ARM (often underneath) to gennys ARM post,,,,,,,,,,,FLD to gennys FLD post,,,,,,,,,,LOAD feeds hot battery voltage to loads like lights and ignition switch.

Jim was kind enough to post my Charging Troubleshooting but Id check the wiring first. ALSO BOTH the genny ad VR need good grounds to work and to be safe Polarize the Generator before trying again

ooked at my Farmall SMTA & it looks like same reg & ARM/GEN is on rear (as this Oliver appears to be) and left to right across front are LOAD, BATT, FIELD.........so he is likely OK on connections with un-used LOAD terminal.
