Dollar General oil

If you bought dollar general oil between 2010 and 2017, this might be worth a look. Www.DGmotoroilsettlement.com. Ran across it Sports Ill.

Nobody. Apparently they got caught selling inferior oil? These ads in mags likely to be their only consequence.

Dollar General sells what they by as it is represented to them. I can't imagine they have chemists. So I would discuss this bad oil with the manufacturer. Jim

Reading the link provided it appears the sold oil not made for todays cars.
It was oil you could use in a older car with no problem.
The link does not say the oil was miss labeled.

What they most like did do is advertise the oil in their weekly sale paper and on store shelves without putting a warning or big neon sign on it that said this oil was for older cars and should not be used in modern cars.

What is this about, The 10W-30/10W-40 were rated SH or SL. The SAE 30 was non detergent.

Plaintiffs claim that Dollar Generals DG Auto motor oil sold between 2010 and 2017 is considered obsolete, in that it is unsuitable, harmful, and ineffective as a motor oil for automotive engines made after 1988 in the case of DG Auto SAE 10W-30 and 10W-40 and after 1930 in the case of DG Auto SAE 30. The Plaintiffs allege that they were misled by Dollar Generals labeling and placement of the DG Auto motor oil in the store and this caused them to purchase the DG Auto motor oil Products believing they were suitable for use in their vehicles.Dollar General denies these claims.

(quoted from post at 12:07:41 03/27/21) I must hasten to add, though, I wouldn't get caught dead buying Dollar General oil. (;>))
ollar General adds a "stupid" tax to everything they sell. There is no lower quality available anywhere.

I reckon they will go after automatic transmission fluid next. I see type F in just about every store there is. It hasn't been specified in forty years.

Oh and antifreeze!

Just mix all the damn colors together and be done trying to convince buyers what color is best.

There was nothing misleading about it. Anyone that cared knew you didn't use 30W nondetergent in a modern care. But it was fine for something old, a lawnmower or an old Ford Tractor..... Or to use the oil in an oil can.

You could say 20W 50 or 30W HD are misleading because no modern car specifies these kinds of oils either.

I doubt a one or 2 time use would grenade your late model engine. Maybe years of use would cause issues...

My Subaru (bought 3rd hand) uses enough oil I would go broke buying the 5-30 Synthetic spec'd by Subaru. It gets 10-30 Diesel oil I buy in either 2gal or 5gal depending on what is on sale. Sometimes regular gas engine oil too if its on sale and cheaper. I have a funnel and a old school galvanized qt oil pitcher.

I disagree about consequences, I doubt anyone who bought oil will get much but I bet dollar general pays millions to the lawyers.

Motor Oil is pretty straight forward.
The SAE rating (Society of Automotive Engineers) rates the viscosity of the oil
The API (American Petroleum Institute) takes care of rating the additives and quality of the oil.
I think the present rating on acceptable oil for modern vehicles is SM, changing to SN in May of 2021
API Oil Ratings

We've had oil experts post here on the YT site that some of the most reputable brands of oil (Quaker State, Castrol, Pennzoil, etc etc etc) and filters are pure junk and are to be avoided at all cost. Product evaluation here is risky business if you believe any of the comments.

Man-o-man SV ...... you're really following me around these days, I'd hate to think you're stalking me. Have I ever cut a cheap filter apart? No I have not. Have I ever had an engine issue or failure ..... no I have not. Have I ever used a cheap filter ...... not sure so I have to ask you, what exactly is a cheap filter in the world of motor oil and filter evaluators?

Good for ford and chryslers up to around '85????? And still good for most power steering systems??

And those "assurances" are as good as the "organic" labeled food.
No way are those specs assured for all the brands of oil sold on any given day.

I've seen the videos and I agree that there are differences in construction. Does it make a real-world difference in the longevity of engines, or is it just a scare tactic to get you to pay for the expensive filters, which have a better profit margin?

Got 218,000 out of my last truck, engine was still going strong. Used nothing but the "inferior" Fram filters, and nary a hiccup. The body was falling apart around it after 12 years in the salt.

(quoted from post at 16:28:32 03/29/21) All that Fram nonsense has been circulating for years and years and years. Like fixing elections and Russians infiltrating every facet of our life in the west and computer tracking chips in the vaccines, I discount it as mass hysteria. I've used Frams forever on all my vehicles once they get their oil changed by myself and I have yet to have an engine issue yet. For every claim that Fram (and other filters) are junk, there are opposing views that state otherwise. Somewhere I'm sure a person could find the same sorts of claims with your so-called top end filters. This one below is a good example, but of course it could secretly be a Russian publication.

estimonials are not worth jack. Here, I'll give a testimonial, too, I installed an engine in a different make car & there was a frame to oil filter interference, so I made a bypass plate & ran with no filter ever after, with no engine problems................so, it is therefore to be concluded that oil filters are just unnecessary baggage! Or maybe, no filter is better than a Fram? :)
