Massey Ferguson 245

I have a Massey Ferguson 245 with an old style lever release dump bucket. Is there any way to convert it to a quick attack style system? I've attached some pictures of the tractor. Also I have the king kutter bucket mounted hay spear that I picked up from an auction. Anyone have any experience mounting these to the buckets? I am concerned about the weight distribution. I also have an older 3pt hay spear for the back of the tractor so I am probably going to try to use that first.

Thank you for the help it is appreciated!

I just realized that the picture that I have included has the older bucket attached. I have a dirt bucket now attached.

You can put a cylinder on it but it is a lot slower than a trip bucket. I had a B250 with trip bucket and I could load faster than our case 310 with a hydraulic bucket. I prefer the trip bucket for cleaning out the barn and loading manure.

Hello, the design of the loader looks like it might be difficult to attach a cylinder to it to give a full working range. Its a bit of a chicken and egg situation. Do you find what you think might be a suitable cylinder and make up the necessary linkage to suit or work out a linkage design and then find a cylinder to fit? Either way working a linkage out takes a lot of time and patience. Then as has been mentioned you need a cylinder of suitable push/pull capability and not too big that you can have a cup of tea whilst you are waiting for it to travel.

I like my old dump bucket! Have you ever mounted a hay spear to it? Like the one king kutter or tractor supply sells? I'm trying to figure out how to bolt it on without a cutting torch to make the hole.

Thanks!

Weld a plate to your socket for the spear then bolt to the inside of the bucket. Will need the plate big enough to put some bracing on it for the socket. Plate a foot square would do it. 4- 5/8ths bolts to hold it to the bucket.

I can't help you with the bucket but maybe the loader itself. If you find a way to attach the bale spear, be VERY careful moving large bales with that loader. It was designed to move manure/bedding not 1000 lb bales of hay. I've replaced the front axle support(bolster) on my 245 that never had a loader, they are not that sturdy. Add in a light weight loader and you may start having problems. Keep that axle support well greased. Best of luck on whatever you decide!

I have a 3 point bale spear but it is an older leinbach type with the thick spear. I can move it with that, I did it today. I think I need a larger MF. When I got this tractor the main purpose was for mowing grass, I didn't really envision using it to move hay. I probably need to just sell the stuff I have and buy a good 3pt attachment for moving the hay. I wish I could take the old spear off the Leinbach and put one of the new more slender and longer spears on it. We have been on our little hobby farm for a year now and have just started storing 3-4 bales at a time because I was able to get a trailer. I'm learning as I go but I don't want to mess the tractor up and I certainly don't want a hay bale heading back towards me.

Just curious, what MF would be a step up in size from the 245. I would want something that still has the option of having a front end loader of coming with a front end loader. Just a step up in size and power.

Thanks again!

Matt

I fed cattle for many years with nothing but a 3PH bale spear, about 70-80 bales a year and my 245 did well. I would have liked to have had a loader but I got by without it and all my hay came from my farm so no transport issue. A step up would be a 255/265/275 or a 165/175. I'm not saying you can't use your loader with round bales but you have to know your limitations. The 245 is an all around tough tractor in my opinion, you should have no trouble selling it should you decide to upgrade. Good Luck!

I agree with MF#1 that your loader looks a little light for moving round bales. Not only is it light, but by the time you get the spear mounted in your bucket the bale will be much further ahead of your front wheels than with more modern loaders, putting more strain on your front axle than it was designed for. I hope that you don't plan on any downhill transport.

For now I am going to just use my 3pt hay spear. It works. I'm going to sell the other ones. I'll stick with my 245 for now. I do like the Massey Ferguson 263, maybe one day!
