Making a spring

Go to www.mcmaster.com and enter "music wire" or "spring wire" in the search box.

While you are there take a look at the wide assortment of springs they list for sale, you may not have to make one for your needs.

Glen .... my best friend's last name when I was growing up was Springsteel ..... his dad was a handy guy but whether he ever made a spring or not I don't know. I do know that the regular hardware-store springs you buy nowadays are of pretty poor quality as compared to a similar-looking spring you might find on a brand new car or in an appliance, etc, not even close.

I have a number of times gone to my locally owned hardware with the old one and gotten the closest to my broken or worn through spring and adapted it.

Small can be different for different folks. I have made a few springs out of 12.5 gauge high tensile fence wire. One was a torsion spring for a JD belt pulley brake. One was the lever return spring for a JD powertrol valve.

I had to modify a hardware store spring to make a shift collar detent spring in a transmission one time worked good it was as strong as the original even the right diameter just had to cut it too length
