Ford 4000. 3 cylinder gas SOS transmission

Rear wheels will not turn. Locked up. Was hauling bale of hay uphill on front spike when rear wheels seized.
Is there any way of unlocking them through the rear end housing?
Had tractor split and tranny inspected. Spindles pretty worn as well as clutch and pressure plate. Was told it needed rebuilt or replaced. Would and 8 or 6 speed manual transmission out of similar tractor bolt up in the place of SOS? This is my first tractor. Very green. Any advice would be much appreciated. I only need it for 25-30 per year so I could get by with worn tranny for awhile as transmission was working fine before wheels stopped turning. Hoping there is a cheaper/simpler fix as I have put a lot of money in it rebuilding engine and hydraulic systems.
Thanks

Transmission swaps have been done on older 600-900 series tractors but don't know about the newer thousand series. Wenger's in Myerstown, PA salvages out a lot
of farm tractors. Not to be discouraging but from what I hear there has been a drop off of older tractors heading for salvage. Might take a little time for something to
come along that you can be confident in.

On rite side above diff lock pedal is lever that disconnects drive line. As far as changing trans everything behind engine except steering will have to be changed including hyd pump.

Lakeside Tractor in Rock Stream, NY (Yates County) also does some salvage on Ford tractors. 607-243-3799.

So you were driving along and tractor quit
moving? Any odd noises when it quit?
Engine starts and runs?
Try this with engine running:
With the pto engaged use an 8' 2x6 and pry
against the pto real hard. Can you stop it
from turning?
That would give us a big clue if the
clutch/input shaft shelled out.
As others said, you need the complete
flywheel, clutch, transmission and rear end
if you want to replace the transmission
with an 8 speed.

Did anyone do any troubleshooting or adjusting on the transmission before splitting the tractor ? To work on the selectospeed you
will also have to remove it from the rear end as everything comes out through the back. When you refer to spindles being worn do
you mean splines ? And the only clutch you would get to externally is called a torque limiting clutch . I highly recommend you find
someone who knows these transmissions to work on it. You may want to post on the ford forum here for more advice . The swap can be
done as mentioned below but you need everything from the transmission back, as well as clutch and flywheel . If you like using the
selectospeed it may be cheaper to repair than swap depending on what your selectospeed needs and labor costs. As mentioned there is
a traction disconnect lever that disconnects the rear end to allow moving the tractor with the engine off.

No one did any adjustments or trouble shooting. And I was
referring to the splines that were visible once split. The one
forward and in the back to pto. Im trying to find someone who
wont charge an arm and a leg to rebuild it as parts alone will
be pretty expensive. I will post an ad to look but Im in
southern Missouri which may be a deterrent?
I do like SOS but its all Ive ever driven. The one I have and
one my brother owned (1959 8or9 n), which he sold and is still
going! Im going to look for traction disconnect lever-good to
know. If it does free up the wheels, does this mean its a rear
end issue or ???
Thanks for your reply and your time! Please reply again if you
have any more helpful info as I have others to reply to and
may include information not previously discussed...

There was a grinding sound but not positive if it came from below or behind. The engine does run and starts easily. I will try the 2x4 trick and test the pto strength. I also was informed of location of traction lever. Thanks for your reply and confirmation of what will need to be replaced if swapping out. Repair or rebuild looking more and more likely at this point or just try to find another one just like it (besides tranny) and have parts to use so its not a complete financial waste... would love to find same 4000 with SOS but havent yet.

I appreciate your advice on location of lever and re-enforcing of information on what a tranny change would involve. Please continue to follow discussion and provide advice if you have something helpful. Thanks

It has been without success to find an SOS tranny. Found one in 3000 diesel but fear it wont be inter-changeable, as well as the rest of the parts to make it feasible to purchase and have a parts tractor around. Thanks for your reply!

traction disconnect disconnects coupler between transmission and rear end, so if it did not roll when disconnected it could indicate rear end issues. If it does roll as designed I would say it would indicate the rear end is not where your problem lies. You may want to ask around locally to see if there is anyone with selectospeed repair experience.

Plan to attempt to disengage it tomorrow or Tuesday. I will see if it rolls or not. Thanks for helping me identify the problem

Today I noticed a 4000 with selectospeed being parted out by Lakeside Tractor mentioned below by NY986 on fingerlakes Craigslist.
If it is good maybe swapping transmissions would be an option. Shipping cost might be an issue.

toby,
My dad bought a new 6000 in 1960.
The SOS was junk.
For that reason, I've never had a desire to buy an old Ford with SOS.
I do have a Jubilee 4 speed.
I've always worried if the SOS broke I would be SOL.
Good luck. Try your luck on the Fork site.
They were very helpful when I bought my Jubilee with hydraulic problems.
geo.

I have spoken to them and are very helpful and knowledgeable. There are a few other things Ive just learned that I can do to try and isolate problem. It may not be tranny after all. I appreciate you and everyone on this forum for all of the help and advice given to me. Wish me luck and I will keep you all posted with the results.

By your other posts I get the idea you had split the tractor and now have it back together? If so there are several troubleshooting
and adjustment procedures you could try. They are outlined in the I&T service manual. I couldnt find mine for the 4000 .I think the
manuals are sold at TSC and are available from this website. Good luck . I have a 4000 gas with selectospeed. It has been a good
tractor for me.

It is back together and I do have the manual. Im having it hauled to my shop this week and have a mechanic scheduled to come look at it. Will review the troubleshooting tips and try to get her going! Thanks for the tip!!!
