Aluminum and WELD-PAK 5000 HD

Has anyone ever used a Lincoln WELD-PAK 5000 HD to weld aluminum?

The company sells a kit for that. It appears to be a gun (Not a spool gun), roller, and tips. I imagine this is to have a clean and dedicated feed system for the aluminum wire that is not contaminated by stuff that's on regular weld wire and oversize tips to minimize hang up.

I am curious if anyone has ever welded aluminum with the WELD-PAK 5000 HD, either with or without the kit, and what the results were?

Miller welders are made from home owner, to Professional/industrial grade. I believe aluminum welding with spool or wire requires phase control/shaping and is not well suited to power supplies that do not have it. Jim

I've never used that welder, but I have welded a lot of aluminum. That welder is going to be pretty low powered for aluminum as it takes almost double the amps to properly weld the same thickness aluminum. They say that machine is only good for 1/8" steel so that means aluminum that thick will be max. And mig on that thin aluminum is tough. Plus it doesn't appear to have a spool gun or push/pull setup so getting the wire to feed will be tough. I wouldn't recommend it. You would be better off with a small tig set up for that.

I see in the manual it is a fluxcore wire machine.
The aluminum kit is only a roller for .035 fluxcore wire, a different liner and a different contact tip.
And the wire supplied in the kit appears to be gas shielded wire.
So you would have to buy the MIG kit to be able to use the aluminium kit. Not including the bottle of gas for aluminium.
Probably looking at $500.
