Made me proud

Finally was able to start getting land in shape for planting. Our longtime helper has been out sick so this left me to run both the disk and chisel plow. That was getting old quick plus wasn't able to make much headway. Made mention of this to my oldest son about him cutting ground ahead of me. He hasn't long turned 14 but has always run the smaller equipment for awhile. Give him a good driver's ed class on what to do and turned him loose. You would have thought he won the lottery. He did very good with it. Bad thing about it it's making me feel old now. Lol.

Made you feel old with your oldest son at 14? My oldest grandson is almost 20! Daughter is 39, son 37. But good for him. Bet he had a blast.

I was 12 when my dad turned me loose in the field on my own. He worked in town too so it was either me or it didn't get done. Only time I remember screwing up, I fell asleep for a minute cultivating corn and wiped out about 50 yards of corn. Glad I wasn't near a fence!

Its nice to be able to have your kids work with you. Doing a job that fills the same slot a fully grown man would do, gives a boy a sense of pride and responsibility. I was in the field learning how to fit ground to plant with my dad , by the time I was 10. He would cultivate and I would harrow behind him, getting the field smooth as possible before planting to hay. Did the same with my 3 boys too. One spring I had all three boys working with me, oldest boy cultivating, two boys pulling manure spreaders, and myself back in the yard loading manure. We sure could get things done.

You might want to consider compensating him for his work, we received a small allowance when I was working on the farm, other families paid an hourly wage to their kids. I know not everyone did this, but it might give your son something tangible for his efforts.

Yes it was a good feeling to be able to have him work alongside me. He gets paid for what he does. Several years ago he wanted his own tractor. I told him to save up for one and when we found something that would be suitable we'd seriously look at. He wound up buying a nice Farmall 140 so he could help in the garden with it. He's had a incurable case of tractor fever since.

Good job dad! Made me smile. Sounds like you've built a solid foundation for your son. Lot of kids not so fortunate.

Thats some nice equipment he gets to work. Good for him stepping up,

Wrong color equipment for us. Lol. I can't remember for sure but I want to think it's an S670 maybe ? It's the landlord's combine. He tends all the grain on this farm and rents us some land to put part of the tobacco on.
