water drainage

I am going to do some vegetable gardening this year. I have 60' of 8" u-trough that I never got put up across top of my grain bins. I will take the screw out of it and fill it with soil. I will set it on stands about waist high so I don't have to bend over to plant, weed and harvest my veggies. Question--If I leave both ends open for water to drain out do you think very much of the dirt will wash out of the ends? If I close the ends what would I use to let water drain but hold the soil in?

cap the ends with some wire mesh or just cap drill holes, we been using old water stock tanks for raised beds, sur beats having to do all the weeding etc. we catch runoff from shop roof for the watering when need it. sure does not take long to fill 1500 gal water tank.

I would block the ends solid, then drill a few 1/2" holes in the bottom, put in a couple inches of gravel, then the rest with clean dirt.

Then install a drip irrigation system. Try to protect them from flooding rains if possible.

My wife has some very large pots (15-20 gal) that she has spike grass and flowers. They catch a lot of sun and need watered very regularly because of the pots exposure to the direct sun. Your metal trough will heat up as well. I would use potting soil, dirt will compact due to the rain and bind the root systems. Just some stuff I've observed around here, may not be a concern where you are. gobble
