starter gasket

Is the paper strip under the band on a starter considered a gasket or is there a special name for it. Is it anything special and can I buy them somewhere or do I need to buy a sheet of something and cut one.
I've got a couple of starters that piece is about to crumble away.

Paper gasket material from .020 to .035 will be fin cheap and easily cut to size. No issue at all. Jim

I have never seen the "paper strip" listed for sale separate of the "bands" but that certainly doesn't prove they are not for sale somewhere!

In addition to helping keep water and debris out of the starter they can keep an errant bare brush lead form shorting to the band, so I believe in keeping them in place.

I make my own out of gasket material from the auto parts store, simple enough to do.

Some have a single staple holding them to the band, if you are careful you can straighten the "legs" of the staple, poke them through the new "gasket" and bend them down again, "as original" to keep the material in place.

Cardboard box or gasket material will work better than a rubber strip. rubber will not let it breathe like the cardboard will.
