Field cultivator for 4430

I have a John Deere 4430 tractor. Recently purchased a glencoe 20 field cultivator for a great price. The old man doesnt believe the 4430 can pull it fast enough to be efficient. What do you guys think? It will be used in the spring to fit ground chisel plowed in the fall.

So, 125hp?

I pulled a 24 foot field cultivator with a 140hp tractor. All it wanted for traction with duals, and power, but I have tough ground and some hills.

I think you will be ok.

Pull a 14 foot vibra shank with a 3020 John Deere it sill pull it 4 inches deep in 5th gear . If that 4430 wont pull 20 feet its awfully tired

I've pulled a 24ft 3pt field cult with 6'' sweeps on virtually level ground with my JD 4255 2WD over many acres. For better stability & traction I utilized axle mount dual rear wheels & frt weights

Bet him a $100 that it will and then decide what you are going to treat yourself with that costs $100.

If it is the earlier model with the two pieces shanks don't plan on pulling it very fast as it will start bouncing and break the shanks off. We had a 14 foot and if you went over 3-4 MPH it wouldn't stay in the ground and broke a lot shanks. Bought a vibra shank and it pulled a lot harder with the same teeth.

We pull 24 foot Vibra shank in 4th low and 1st high with 1466 with duals. Been doing that for years. Few years ago kept up with the 16 row corn planter with it. Usually go over field twice once to dig it loos then second to smooth it out.
Also can pull 25 foot Glencoe soil finisher with it lose 1 gear and works it pretty hard. Normally use the Stieger on it. or the 7140 with egg beater.

It depends on how deep you want to go. Here in Kansas we typically run field cultivators very shallow, only an inch or two deep, to conserve moisture. At that depth a 20 ft cultivator with sweeps could be pulled at 5 mph with a 100 hp tractor. If you sink it in deeper the load will obviously increase quickly.

On reasonably level ground with good rear tires and pulling maybe 5-6 inches deep you should be able to go 4 or more miles per hour. All bets are off with bald rear tires, pulling it like a chisel plow, or going up a steep hill.

I used to pull a 22' landoll and a 3 bar spring tooth harrow mounted on the back with a 135 hp 4430. We've got alot of hilly ground here and it pulled it easy in C2 about 6-6.5 mph at 4" deep.

We pulled a 30 foot Wilrich with a Case 2290. Guys told me the same thing that couldn't pull it fast enough. Only thing is my Dad was working ground ahead of me with the planter. He was only gonna go so fast anyway. Unless you need to bury it to china a 4430 should play with that FC.

In my area a 4430 JD with duals would play with a 20 ft field cultivator running 3-4 inches deep..My Oliver 1950 at 105 horses pulled this 24ft IH field cultivator..The ground was real dry and cloddy in the picture..
