Ford Engine swap

We have a Ford 5000 with a bad engine and we were looking to buy a whole new rebuilt engine and just bolt it into the tractor to save time of rebuilding it ourselves. The engine is a 256 diesel, but I found a 268 engine for the same price will it bolt in with little trouble?

Bolt right in, the back of the 3, 4 and 6 engines are basically the same all the way through. What 268 are you looking at? BSD444 with the webbed block?

I often wonder why Ford made some many different combos on the 3 and 4 cylinder engines. The 6 cylinder was 401 cubes with 4.4 bore and stroke only. The others had Almost every combination of 4.2/4.4 bore and 4.2/4.4 stroke

First 5000 had a 233, 4.2 bore and stroke, later ones had 256, 4.4 bore 4.2 stroke, then the 268 was 4.4 bore and stroke.

Looking at this engine, it's only 2 hours away so I figured I can drive to go get it. This is actually my dad's tractor that we are fixing I don't know a whole lot about Ford
tractors I am kind of the odd one in the family and prefer Deere. The little research I did do about swapping the engines looks like what you said with the bore size being the same
the 268 is just slightly bigger stroke. Safe to assume the old head should bolt onto either engine you think?

Head will bolt right on, only thing you may have trouble with is they changed the head bolt from 1/2 to 9/16 at some point during production. I believe all the web blocks are 9/16. You might have to drill or ream the bolt holes in the head and rocker shaft hold downs and source new head bolts.
