I have read where it was not uncommon for unattended steam locomotives' to creep away, the throttle linkage is quite long and expansion or contraction could cause the steam valve to open a small amount. Also air or steam operated brakes could blead down. They were left with banked fires and some steam pressure unless they where under repair.
