Why did I do THAT?

I made a new wiring harness for this 1943 Army airport tug I have been working on for way too long. This isnt my first rodeo by far when it comes to making harnesses. I pride myself in doing it neat and correct in every aspect. Correct color code and cloth covered wire like original.

Today I finally got to where it was time to fire it up but first before I hit the starter I popped off the distributor cap and turned on the key with plans to flick the points with a screwdriver to check for spark. I turned on the key and the points immediately turned red hot with the red creeping up the points arm before I could get the key turned back off. What the? A quick check of the wiring found no primary wires going to the coil. I had hooked the power wire from the key straight to the distributor! Duh!!! It didnt take long to straighten it out and the engine does run but I owe the owner a new set of points. I still cant believe I pulled this stunt.

One of the first times I tried to hot wire a car I hook the hot wire to the wrong side of the coil and let the smoke out of the points. But that was a very long time ago
