I have a 1976 Deere 2040 and I am searching for the brake disc. One side is friction paper and the other sise is a bronze impregnated graphite material. There is a replacement but not of the same design. I will continue searching... Any help appeciated. The friction side in the picture went metal to metal due to water destroying the friction bond.

Hello bigbug welcome to YT! The folks that sponsor this forum also have parts available below is a link to the part you are looking for. As you can see it sells for $91.02, but you must realize this is not a John Deere part rather it is called an aftermarket. Just as a corner auto parts store sells aftermarket parts for a car and auto dealers sell Original Equipment parts. An original equipment brake disc is also available for your tractor is available from John Deere but one there is priced at $297.00. The other question is is this an American or British model. Before ordering please double check that the part is for your application. Odd that you could post a picture as a new poster, most times that is restricted until you have 5 posts. All good, it helps to understand your descriptions.
YT parts 2040 brake disc

Looked at this closer today it looks like the YT disc I directed you to in the link is for a heavy duty rear axle option with 15 internal splines. If you click the link and then click the red ..brakes..near the top, then you can more of the brake parts they have available for the 2040. A couple items down it shows another disc that the description starts with 12 teeth.... which is another possibility for your tractor, all dependent on your serial number. On this post I will add a link to the JD parts pages for the 2040. You will see there that there are multiple serial number breaks that apply to select the right parts for your tractor. You mentioned that you dont think that a replacement part you had seen have the proper material on one side. I think maybe you have gotten the wrong idea of what is on there. The bonded material on both sides should look similar to what you would find on a clutch plate, with the square or diamond pattern as shown in one of your pictures. It also looks to me like you may need to consider replacing the other part that was rubbed with metal to metal contact, that is if you expect any service life out of the new lining on the replacement disc. Best of luck! Let us know if you have other questions. I would probably suggest you post future questions in the YT John Deere topic section.

Hello: Thank You for the help. I have done some research and yes I have the standard Final Drive and not the heavy duty version. I also found that they have replaced the old service part with a new one that is different but has more modern and tougher friction material. I used the JD Parts Catalog, and found the current base part. Thanks again ...

Thanks for the come back. I am not sure why I go to extra lengths to help folks out with certain things. Quite often with a 1st time poster when you go extra steps you quite often hear no reply. I think in this internet age many folk think we should be like Goggle and immediately return an answer, does not always work that way here. Glad I could help. Did you happen to possibly register here previously with the same email, it still seems odd that you could post a picture on your first visit.

Yes, I might have registered before but I had to double clutch and try to post twice before the pictures would upload. Thanks again ...
