ATF did it again

So we hauled in a Farmall cub. Hooked up a battery to see if it would spin over. Well it would not. It would move a little but that was it. Pulled the plugs and pumped ATF into each cylinder and let sit a little bit and did some other things. Came back to it and it spun over just fine. Used the starter to get it closer to the shop. Tried all 3 forward gears and it pulled it self just fine. It isn't in the shop yet but only about 50 feet from it. Now I need a carb and also probably going have to figure out how to get to the points in the mag. Gas tank is about half full of old gas and will not flow out of the sediment bowl

Years ago I did a lot of work to a cub but that was 15 plus years ago. One of the biggest things if doing work on the mag. I have not done much if any work to a mag in the past

Well I have it in the shop now. Just for the heck of it I checked the mag for spark and it has a good blue/white spark that jumps a 1/4 plus gap from the center wire of the cap so if it had a carb it would probably run

Old - are you using straight ATF oil or mixing something with it. How much to you put into each cylinder? I have a Super C that had sat for years and when I got it running last year it smokes like the end of the world is coming and compression is down so I'm think stuck rings. It got better using sea foam in it but all I did was cultivate with it last summer and it still smokes a lot. This year I'm going to get it to stop smoking one way or another. I'm going to try the ATF oil before tearing it apart.

On one like you have I'd fill the cylinders and also pour some down the exhaust then let it sit a week or so. Be sure to put the plugs back. Then after a week pull the lugs and spin it over to clear the cylinders. Yes it will make a mess but good chance the compression will come up

One guy told me to mix one part ATF, with 1 part kerosene, and 1 part Marvel Mystery Oil to unstick an engine.

I have always used straight ATF and have freed up over 30 engines doing that including this cub.

Glad it's working for you but I NEVER use starter to turn an engine if there's a chance it is stuck. That's a good way to break a ring that could have been saved by using a little patience. If there's one chance in 1,000 engine is stuck,I put lubercant in cylinders before trying to turn engine over. I NEVER try starter until I can rock engine with fan belt or screwdriver on ring gear. I also wouldn't use starter to propel a tractor or car because it is hard on the starter. My go to recipie is 3 parts atf and 1 part acetone. In real life,I have a 2 gallon jug labeled "cylinder soak" sitting on my work bench. Those WD-40, liquid wrench,PB Blaster and such that stop squirting while half full have a hole punched and poured into the jug. I use the jug for anything I can rather than use spray cans. When I need lub for a stuck engine I add 3-1 atf and acetone if there's not enough in jug for the job.

Well again I have not said every thing. At first I could turn the engine over with the fan but after that I tried the starter. Then it would not spin over but move just a little so then I put in the ATF. Been doing this with engines for 40 years now so BTDT many many times and have yet to break a ring. I have in one or 2 bent a push rod but that is about it
