Got here at 4am. Had a fellow stop and offer to sell me a 32 of Budweiser. I turned him down.

Best time I found to be Chicago I found
out is right after 1. The only bad thing
is you had to watch out for the people
from the bars. Also be careful of low
bridoes. They will say 13.6 but they put
new black top on when fixing the roads an
don't change the sine an alot of drivers
hit the trailer top.

Well, Jd man, that is not very nice. Here in NH when they are repaving and not grinding they still grind under the bridges so that clearance is maintained.

My hats off to anyone who can back a big rig to a loading dock.
I don't think I could back up a 20 ft implement trailer to a loading
dock and I full view.
Do you have backup cameras?
George

George, the longer the trailer, the easier it is to back into a dock. A 20 foot trailer is a handful even for an experienced driver. A 12 foot utility trailer will give most drivers a hard time. Practice makes it easier.

14 years ago, I could get around Chicago in a semi without a map. I realized I spent more time in Milwaukee and Chicago then I did at home. Decided it
was time for a different life. Was still way better than NYC/NJ.

I don't care, I still find it very difficult when you are blindsiding and you can see neither the back of the trailer or what you are backing past and to.

It's easy for me to say because I'm retired from driving & things do change. But if you don't like Chicago don't ever go to New York

I ran five turns a week to Chicago, rail containers up and steel back. It was nice when they finished I-55,that sped things up.

Ah Chic-A-Go . Learned vary early on that you are WISE to only venture in and out in DAYLITE hours . Back in 79 i took a load of what was called CFC salt out to Bloomington and got that off rather early in the evening and already knew i was to load stainless steel scrap going back to near Pittsburgh Pa. out of a scrap yard up on the N/W side . It paid vary well was and easy run BUT i never got loaded till the afternoon and always came out in the rush hour traffic and had to fight my way out. I got this hair brain idea that since the NIGHT was still young that i would just go up to the scrap yard and set up my pup tent and camp out and BE FIRST in line in the morning . WOW the drive up was nice hardly any traffic . Not a sole around when i got there , parked inft. of the gate so they would wake me up when they got there. Shut the truck off and crawled back into International Motel and drifted off to sleep . Till i was wakened from the truck shaking and looked out of the bunk to see two guys ( not saying color ) tryen to break in . As i came out of the bunk one of them screamed HE's GOT a GUN as they bailed off the steps and ran like the devil himself was after them . won't say why they increased ground speed . so now that the excitement is over i am going back to bed . and just start to get comfy when someone is beating on the door , out of the bunk with friends in hand and stuff them into the nose of a Chicago cop . He was cool he was just checking the area as a Noise complaint was called in . I had to explain , he understood and he INFORMED me that this was NOT a good camping area as the wild life can be dangerous and would STRONGLY suggest that the next time to find better camping areas OUT of the City , BUT that i could finish out the night and him and his partner would make sweeps around the area the rest of the evening . From then on i would do my Camping out on the east side of Portage In. at our terminal . Camping out made no difference as i still did not get loaded and out of there till 3:30 and had to fight the traffic . That is when i found out that everybody that hauls out of there is loaded by seniority and i was # 5 on the list and would always be the first to start loading AFTER LUNCH .

ounds like that maybe 'ol Frankie should have taken Chicago with him when he 'departed'. :)

I with you on that one. I have a time time backing up my pickup. Part of my problem is I can't turn my head very far. Stan

Why are the facts not nice just the facts. In Detroit they paved I 94 and never changed the bridges while they paved it a couple inches higher so it was out into the gutter over the concrete. I used to go to all those rail yards with containers for a few years getting some of them out of the slot they parked them in was fun. Pulled those temperature controlled garbage wagons for about a year. Expedited with Robert's Express for a couple years. Last was the best step with machinery. Tractors dozers and such. That being treated like a third class person at garbage warehouse's was old real fast. Best times hauling was the last 15 years as a motor carrier hauling equipment. Folks were glad to see you come to load it and glad to see you there to unload it.
