Something I've often wondered about: Why did they put the bucket so far away from the front on early loaders?

Can't see any advantage and several disadvantages - weight, leverage, lifting capacity...

It lets you bang into more things backing up when in close quarters.

Good question. We had a later version, and there were several differences. One, being the bucket was much closer to the tractor. I understand it with some modern loaders- made to fit multiple tractors, and MFWD. But these old loaders were made specifically for AC by Freeman.

Just an idea, if the bucket is close to the front of the tractor, when it is raised up it will be OVER the tractor and you will not be able to get close enough to your trailer/spreader to dump the load into it.

Those old loaders were single spool. You dumped the bucket with a trip lever. You could not meter your flow. If the bucket was low and close when you dumped, the over run would slam it into the radiator. If high, you'd dump on top of the tractor.
