Ok, this little van has been setting for about5 years. I went to start it and the fuel pump doesn't work. Why are there 5 wires to the pump? One wire has full voltage and another wire has 7V, with the pump unhooked. How does it work? Maybe the computer grounds one wire, but what are the other wires for? I put in a new fuel pump just a little while before I stopped driving it. It worked good. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I assume one hot wire goes to the pump and the other goes to the float. Maybe tomorrow I'll ground them out through a resistor and maybe find which one is the fuel gauge wire. Maybe someone has a wiring diagram? And tell me which wire is which. I could pull the pump, but that's a job in itself.

Did the original fuel pump you removed years ago match up exactly for terminals with the new one you put in back then? So there were some "extra" wires then when you replaced it with a new one but it worked fine. Was the new pump you put in exactly the same as the first one? Maybe the fuel pump that was in it when you got the vehicle (assuming it was used) is not an OEM Mitsubishi part? Obviously a wiring diagram would help. Hard to find that in a web search. Tough question, my questions are just curiosity, a dealer would probably struggle with something that old.

Have you looked on Auto Zones website.

They have wiring diagrams for some more popular models.

You have to register with them to access the help section.

I would discourage any grounding of terminals without knowing what is what. You could easily multiply your problems.

You didn't by chance keep the old pump?

Thanks for that idea! I have the old pump somewhere, but finding it in a pile of iron to haul for scrap might present a problem! Ha
I didn't know that AutoZone had wiring diagrams, thanks.

The pump was not exactly a match for the old one but it only needed for me to make a little different hose. I doubt if that's the problem because it worked ok for a short time after that, but it's definitely something think about. Thanks
