Looking at buying a Ruger American Ranch rifle in 5.56 NATO.Anyone have one? Opinions? Going to use it for things like Foxes and Coyotes.I have a lot of .223
and 5.56 ammo is one reason I'm looking at it.

I have a couple of the older mini 14 rifles. Once I put a scope on them the accuracy was disappointing.

I think newer variants are better in regards to accuracy, I bought one new, stainless steel, just a simmons scope and seemed ok on accuracy. Don't shoot it much, still like new, but at least legal in this state.

You might like another platform much better, say an AR, with a heavy target barrel, they are tack drivers. Have to make these NYS state safe act compliant here. Not too long of a drive to a place over in KY where they have 2 events annually for the machine gunners, awful lot of stock of heavy barrels and such. They do shoot nice, heavy as heck but....

I bought one along time ago. Not sure about the accuracy I was just wasting ammo. It has not been shot in a good 20 years. I use a .22-250 or .300 Weatherby mag for coyotes now.

The Ruger American Ranch rifle shares nothing with the Ruger Mini 14 Ranch except possibly the caliber.

The early ones were really cheaply made but the newer models are much better. Back when they came out in 2011 they were competing with the Savage Axis model for the cheapest gun off the shelf - both have made great improvements since then. The Ranch is a later version and people I talk to think the Ruger Americans are great - especially with their adjustable trigger. I have a Ruger American 17HMR, not the same but similar to its big brothers.

Horrible rigger, horrible accuracy, poor fit and finish, no bedding. Very high barrel harmonics. I had the pencil barrel ranch rifle. Change ammo poi changed 5 inches at 100 meters. Installed barrel struts, flash hider, trigger job, glass bedded, Still could not get a 1 inch group at 50 meters. My 1956 Remy 40x BA .22 shoots a .5 inch group at 50 meters, shooting pure factory setup.
Went to an older Remy .223 700 BDL Varmint model and THERE is a rifleman's rifle. Like shooting an air rifle with 400 meter range.

The antis have been trying to ban the Ruger Semi in Canada since 1989.
Recently anything now too that is black , plastic , semi or look military . Buy back scheme being planned .

Bought a .308 version for my wife about 5 years ago.shoots 1-1/4 groups has a nice trigger but the plastic magazine doesnt always release the 2nd 3rd and 4th rounds reliably.she loves it but for that.you tube has videos on how to fix it though

This is not the Mini 14 Ranch rifle I have one of those, this is the bolt action American Ranch.Ranch has a little shorter barrel than the regular American.

I have the Ruger American Ranch Rifle in 450 Bushmaster. Shoots straight nice to carry, like the trigger. I have killed 5 deer all one shot kills. No recoil.

Sister has a Ruger American in 270 with Nikon scope. I've shot it a couple times. It seems to put the bullet where it's aimed at. It's as accurate as I am. I don't care for the feel of it for myself. I have to have a Monte Carlo stock. For coyotes I prefer the 22-250 but I expect 223 is easier to find right now. I wouldn't turn one down. I have the American in 22 mag. and 17 hmr. I really like the 17 but haven't gotten around to shooting the 22 mag.

Sorry I just seen ruger and ranch and mini 14 popped into my head. I have no experience with a bolt action ruger, have 10-22s and several revolver and semi auto handguns and all are good guns.

I don't have any Ruger bolt actions, but my opinion is, you can't beat a Savage for accuracy out of the box, and then you get the accu-trigger too. My 2 cents worth.

I had the same thoughts as you when I saw American Ranch, I thought Mini 14. I bought a stainless steel model 30 years ago. Bet I haven't shot it in years. Really only good if you want to splatter an area with bullets. When I go calling for varmints I use a 22-250 bolt action which is much more accurate. Tom in Mn.

I love my Ruger 10/22's and Ruger pistols I have but haven't been impressed with any of their larger caliber long guns I've owned or shot.
Higher in the price scale but I really like my Henry Long Ranger in 223/5.56, I'd rather shoot it than my AR, but I'm kind of fond of lever guns.

both ruger and savage are good guns for what they were intended for but are not the same as a Remington 700 adl or a ruger mark V. if you like ruger and can find one they made a No.1 and No.3 and I have a No.3 in .223 with scope good shooting gun and fun.

The bolt action rifles are a fine rifles,as stated before the mini-14 had terrible accuracy, the problem was to much head spacing,if you removed the barrel and milled off one thread to get one complete turn more on it and rechambered them they shot real well.I think they were head spaced loose to chamber all brands of .223 and 5.56 ammo which they did but accuracy suffered.

I bought my son one for Christmas. Shoots great, great trigger, threaded muzzle, 60 degree bolt throw. For a cheap bolt action it doesn't feel like it.

Downsides, I wish it had iron sights on it and with the short 16" barrel, the magazine is at the balance point.
