Looking for a CO2 bottle, 40 cu ft. All I see are tanks by weight, like 20 pounds, 5 pounds. No mention of the cu ft. How are smaller CO2 tanks identified? Stan

Just a guess, but I suspect that because CO2 is a liquid under pressure, it is not sold or measured by volume, but rather by weight. That would be my educated guess.

Here is what I have come up with, it looks like a 5 pound cylinder would work:

Co2 is sold by weight,it really depends what you want to do with it.To run a Kegerator they use a 5# tank,they are about the size of a 2 liter soda bottle. For welding you need at least a 29# tank,they are the same size as a 60cf argon tank.If you buy an aluminum tank make sure it was made after 1994, or it was made by Carolina. The aluminum in some early tanks were brittle and are not to be refilled although a lot of places still fill them. Find the test date or the manufacture date before you by a tank,Co2 has to be retested every 5 years before it can be filled. You can buy them online but we will not fill a tank unless it has DOT numbers on it,some china tanks do not. I think if you go to Cyberweld.com you can see the differences.

How many here reconize the equation PV = nRT? ideal gas law.

Move P to the right side of = and you get

V = nRT/P

Brings back old memories.

George.

I just refilled my bottle for my MIG welder. I have an 80 Cu Ft. Gas combination I use is 75%/25% Argon/CO2. When in doubt you could go to a local welding supply and see first hand.

I don't recognize it off the top of my head. P probably equals pressure, V equals volume, and don't know about the nRT. Thanks.

Have you talked to your local welding supply house? I'm sure they could clarify it all for you in a minute or two.

Argon-Carbon Dioxide (75%25%) will be a cubic foot measure. It depends what you are going to TIG,steel is a different gas from aluminum. 80 cubic foot is about right for hobby welders.
