Orscheln Farm and Home

Just saw on Facebook where Orscheln's has merged with Tractor Supply Co. the article said it is an all cash deal worth $297 million. Orsehlen's is a 60 year old company with 167 stores in 11 states. TSC was started in 1938 and has 1900+ stores in 49 states. Orschelens came to Cape Girardeau, Mo in the late '60s and just last year moved into a new building. TSC has a fairly new store about a mile south on the same street. This was reported in the Columbia, Mo. news.

My nearest Orscheln's and the nearest Tractor Supply are about 1/2 mile from each other. I like one and hate the other.
I wonder which store will stay open.

I hope this is wrong or if it is right then I hope Orscheln's stays the same as it is. We have an Orscheln's in town and a TSC 25 or so miles away. Both have there good and bad points to them

Old, before I posted this I did a Google search and it confirmed the merger. I would think that with the stores being 25 miles apart you may be safe in keeping both stores. Now if they operate under both names is yet to be seen.

I agree it will be lights out for Orsheln. They bought them to eliminate completion. I would bet anywhere there is both stores the big O will be gone.

Interesting.

There is a relatively new (5-6 years) Orschlens store about 4 miles from me. There is also a new (about 3 year) TSC store less than one mile further down the road. The Orschlen store is about twice the size of
the TSC store. The TSC store is only there because the city gave them a multi-year tax abatement to anchor a failing strip mall. There are two other much larger TSC stores within 15 miles.

It will be interesting to see what happens. My guess is that the small TSC store will close when the tax abatement ends and the sign at the much larger Orschlen store will change from Orschlen to TSC. I will
not be happy.

Dean, that is the way it is here, the new Orscheln store is much large than the TSC store. I'm thinking over time the smaller TSC store will close and move to the new much, larger TSC store.

The orschlens close to me was lease was
not renewed so a big sporting goods store
could go in but it went bankrupt. The
store was empty till harbor freight went
in. Moe all we have is Tuff $hit Charlie's
and it's a joke. I drive 20 mile to go to
rural king.

But TSC, just doesn't have much foot traffic, so i didn't think they had 297 million to play with, there are two Home of Economy's that moved out of their existing store, and moved into old K marts, that gave them about 5 times the sq footage they had before, but i am sure they got 3 yrs payment free too !!

Yes indeed, it will be interesting to see how this plays out. The two "big towns" in our area (Newton and McPherson, KS - both about 20 miles away) each have an Orschelns and a TSC store. I prefer Orschelns and tend to do most of my shopping of this nature at the McPherson store although I have done business at all of them. Hopefully when the dust settles it is a benefit for the customer and not just for the shareholders.

I do not even try at TSC anymore, they never have what I want ,local it is Orslins,or in QCY or Hannibal it is Farm and Home Supply. (local chain in this area)

Our nearest Orschelns is 20 miles in one direction, and the nearest TSC is 25 in the other. No competition between the two. The Orschelns seem to have better staff, willing to get or find what you need. The TSC, not so much. Either would be good for me, hopefully the Orschelns, when it becomes TSC, will keep the same staff, and expand its offerings. It is in a good location, I think. Even this is in the middle of cattle country, very few stores like either one. zuhnc

Yeah...talked to several of the employees at our local Orschlens....they said they were confident in keeping their jobs. Nearest TSC is in St
Joe - 85 miles. The local Orschlens is moving to a new - larger - store in mid May (about half done on construction...), so we will see.

That the biggest store I have seen. Most are like the one 25 miles South. There is not many TSC as big as that one that I have seen.

I've never seen any of these stores in Northern Illinois, got a lot of Farm and Fleets. Are they all on the same order.

Oerscheln's is in the process of building a big new store about five miles from my house. It's about twice as big as the store it's replacing. It's next door to a Walmart superstore.

I hadn't heard of the merger, yet.

There's been a TSC here for ever since I can remember.

They built a new TSC about a mile down the same state highway about a year ago.

I thought they would close the old one, but it's still there.

Well, gosh, that HOPEFULLY means your supply of dog cat, and rabbit food and horse treats is secure!

As to actual "tractor parts", probably not so much!

The bigger shopping town a half hour away has TSC, been there a long time rather small store; and a locally owned farm store, been there a long time.

Mills Fleet Farm moved in a few years ago, huge store.

My town has a Runnings store thats 7 miles from me, it is a regional fleet and farm type store that started 50-60 years ago in Minnesota, west of me a ways, and has
quite a few stores in the upper Midwest now. They are really good and I use them a lot. They are not the cheapest, but I cant drive an hour round trip to save $1.69 so
Im happy to support Runnings.

TSC was always fun to walk through, as it was different from my usual farm store. They arent what they used to be, I havent been there in over a year.

Mills Fleet Farm used to be very cool when they were 2 hours away, a special awesome trip! Now that they are closer, they too have a very small farm section, the cool
army surplus stuff is gone, and its just another store.

The locally owned C&S store is actually pretty cool, they have a lot of hardware stuff. Their farm section too has gotten smaller, but that is the way of things.

So, Im glad of my local Runnings stays pretty stable. They are a good store.

I have been in an O store, and there is what, Baumgartens or some such, and both of those are nice chains, or were, they are different to me and it is fun to see the
different tho similar products.

There are 3 TSC stores within 20 miles of my farm, one is only about 5 miles away.Best place to buy hydraulic fluid, oil, bolts and other hardware, dog food in the area and we have a couple Lowes and Walmarts real close.Where else do you go to get a hydraulic hose on Saturday afternoon? And they do sell tractors and a big assortment of 3pt implements.A little high on feed as we have a couple farm coops that are real good too that sell feed and things like twine at a good price.

Have you ever seen the blue book tsc put out ? There is all kinds of tillage and tractor parts in that book . I dont get to tsc very often because the three closest stores are about 70 miles one way . I have a farm story about 11 miles away that stocks quite a bit of farm stuff

TSC around here is lucky to have chick started on hand any more. I don't think they even have the blue book setting out any more. there use to be a central tractor 20 miles away that had lots of parts but TSC bought them out.

As I stated in another thread, Tractor Supply is not concerned about having stores close to one another. As long as the store is making money it will remain open.

There are 3 TSC stores within 10 miles of me. 8 within 30 miles. 20 within 50 miles.

We have some Runnings here in upstate NY. They basically follow along from East to west along the I-90/US 20 corridor. I have been to the one nearest me a few times but its quite a ways from me. I am hoping that they will continue expanding in NY. The one I have been to is like a hugeTSC with more hardware type supplies and a large sporting goods section, which is the busiest/ most profitable part of that location. I have a friend who has purchased a new lawn tractor and walk behind snowblower there and when after 2 tries they couldnt fix the snowblower when he had problems with it immediately they gave him another one which was an fairly good upgrade with no additional cost.

Eliminate competition? What competition? TSC was already circling the drain. TSC was not even in the same league as Orscheln's.

Here is what Tractor Supply says about the deal. https://hayspost.com/posts/f8faefcc-e857-4459-82e8-

(quoted from post at 22:53:13 02/17/21) orschelins is a lot bigger than TSC by far

Their stores had many more square feet but in terms of store count TSC beat them by miles and miles. Sounds like TSC was flush with cash and Orshelns needed it.

When I got my VAI I serviced it, and an oil filter at Orshelns was nearly $20 so I went to TSC and same filter was $4. I never went back to Orshelns. I didn't have to do engine work or anything too serious to get the VAI running and converted to 12 volts. TSC had everything I needed except the alternator, at good prices.

I doubt very much if any of us will notice any difference. TSC, Orscheln's, Bomgaar's, Farm and Fleet all seem to have the same stuff, same brands, probably all sourced from the same supplier.

Same situation in Salina, both stores. Orschelns opened in Ellsworth about 5 years ago. They are currently working on opening a Bomgaars (SP) store in the old Shopko location in Lyons. As to choices, it seems like Orschelns have more specials than TSC. I shop both stores in McPherson occasionally. But Salina is just more convenient as we have more children living there.

Kinda hard for a company that's "circling the drain" to cough up $297,000,000, that's two hundred ninety-seven MILLION dollars, to buy up Orshelin's.

So they must be doing all right. They're opening stores left and right. Just opened up a third one within 10 miles of my place.

You're going to Miss Orschlen.

TSC is more into dog food than anything else. especially tractors. If they are out of something, don't count on them getting it in a week or two. What is in the store is for sale. But if you can find it somewhere else, it will
probably be cheaper.

The last two weeks I worked there, I worked nine consecutive days. My last day started at 12 noon and I got off at 2 am. (14 hours) and I still did not get paid any overtime.

There is only one TSC store in my area and it is quite small. Never more than one or two vehicles in the parking lot. On the other hand, parking lots of the Bomgaar's and Orscheln's are usually so full that a person needs to hunt for a parking place. Maybe TSC should have invested their money into expanding and improving what they already had.

TSC is one of the fastest-growing retailers in the country. No, their stores aren't big and they don't have a lot of selection, but they have a pretty good handle on what their customers want. There are three TSCs within 30 minutes of me, and they all do a brisk business. In Fenton, MI, they opened a huge Family Farm and Home less than a mile from TSC, but it doesn't seem to have affected TSC's business much. The Family F&H store is three or four times the size of TSC, but doesn't seem to attract as many customers. I usually go to TSC, knowing I can get in and out quickly, rather than wander around the bigger store. If I go to F&H first, half the time I end up going to TSC anyway.
