Yesterday we got up to the mid 20's so we
headed to the barn. Got the Ag project
cub back together, enough to run. Next
issue the governor isn't acting right. As
soon as we crunk up the tractor, it tried
to run away, with throttle at 1/4. Hit
the kill switch. Tinkered with it a bit
then refired it. Wife worked the linkage
between the governor and carb. No
resistance on it at all. Also if you
advance the throttle it revs way up but
when you pull it back it doesn't slow
down. Easy fix?

Are you sure it is not the other way around weights working but the springs not hooked up or broke?

Kevin, let me add my 2 cents worth here. The basic function of a governor is to maintain a set speed. This is done by the throttle rod stretching a governor spring to open the throttle butterfly and the centrifugal force of the governor weights push against a yoke or fork on the shaft that moves to close the throttle to the correct rpms and then it is a balancing act between the two to keep the constant rpm as set by the throttle lever position. The throttle lever/rod is always connected to the spring for opening and the governor rod is the one that is connected to the throttle shaft of the carburetor. I hope this helps you understand the basic function of a governor on an engine.

Sounds like 2 problems.

The governor not working or the link between the carb and gov out of adjustment range, or a bad governor.

But if you closed the throttle against the idle stop and it still kept revving, ether a bad vacuum leak or the throttle plate is loose or in backward or not centered in the bore.

One of mine the throttle butterfly corroded to the bore from sitting and when it started it snapped those two little screws in the shaft off so the butterfly dropped down and was wide open.

Redtom.....brand new carb....from Amazon. Got the same brand on several cubs. Including the purple one.

Kevin, I hope you at least put some clothes on before you went to the shop to get a fire going in your heater this morning.

Kevin, before you open it up, like someone said said before, make sure the rod from the carb to governor is properly adjusted. Cant remember the procedure but you can probably find it on Google or somewhere.

inside the governor housing. a broken spring could let the engine only run at an idle, or it could run wide open. nothing/no adjustment in between.
