Long post. Sorry.
Where can we buy 14.9-28 R4s?
My 85 yo tractor pal Kenny has a very nice Ford 545 loader tractor.
It has 16.9-24 R4s on it now.
The wheels are the 2 piece center/looped rim type. See photos.
He wants to put chains on it for better winter traction but not enough room between the tire and loader frame for chains.
If we move the tires out it's too wide to haul on my trailer - which we do fairly often.
I have a good pair of 13x28 rims/centers that I might let him wrangle me out of. That size would give him clearance for chains and still fit on my trailer.
However, he insists he needs R4s on that tractor. Says a loader tractor will tear the lugs off of an R1.
I argued that but he's a stubborn old Norwegian and gets to be wrong or right as he pleases.
14.9 24s will NOT do either.

Local tire shop we buy from can't find R4s in 14.9-28.
Does anyone have a source for that size?
Is there another type of tire that will satisfy him? 12 ply something? Radial?

PS, It behooves me to help him cause I use the tractor more than he does.

This is what a stubborn old Norwegian looks like.

Looks to me you can remove the wheel from the tractor and put the wheel center on the backside of the rim to get clearance.

Do you haul the tractor in the winter? Obvious solutions - move tires out and chain it up if hauling in winter is not expected, then put wheels back when you remove chains in spring - or- chain up the 13.6-28 tires and install them for winter - then switch back in spring(remind him he wont have a nickle invested if you loan him the tires, I cant imagine he would tear up any tires, that tractor looks like new) ,add some weight to rear(mounted weight or implement, wheel weights, loaded rear tires) or buy the tractor from him and send him out shopping for a nice mfwd tractor/loader.

I made a ramp that goes over the fenders when I haul a tractor wider then my fender spacing. I have a couple of lifting hooks on the ramp so I can put it on or off without wasting to much time.

Have you tried Friedrich Tire and Rim? They are close to you in Chanhassen MN 952-237-2207. I have not been to his store, bought tractor tires from him and picked them up at the Pioneer Power Show. Good guy.

Try tredz central, south of Lincoln,ne. Phone is 8885138473. They'll ship anywhere. I'm not affiliated with them other than a customer.

BKT and Firestone both make a 14.9-24 industrial R4 tires
Google Pete's Tire Barn, punch in the tire size in the search box and they will come up

Stubborn Norwegian has a nice head of hair. Guess us of German decent aren’t that lucky.

Considering the price of new tires I would look at a set of drive over fenders for the trailer. I would ask around for a trailer dealer that does repair work.

I have had ags on my Deere loader backhoe for years now, and plenty of much larger tractors with loaders or pulling way heavier draft loads run ag tires, lugs will be just fine. R4 just wears better on the road that's the only real difference

Add ballast to the rear tires not quite as good as chains but my main snow pusher does better with weight than my other tractor with chains without as much weight

Thanks for the ideas fellas.
Something to go on now.
The old man wants R4s so if they available that's what I'll find him. Have 2 drums of CaCl here that I'll pump in them and he keeps some extra weight on the 3 point.

I did call and email a couple of places but they are out of stock or back ordered.
At least now I know they are available.
My trailer is a 16' 13K bumper pull. Shop built. Except for the fenders it was hot dip galvanized when new and 20 years later still has ZERO rust. It serves me well and No way I'm going to modify it for the sake of a tractor.

How about keeping those tires and using the screw in carbide ice studs instead of chains. I've never used them so I have no idea how good they are, but I believe you can take them out and re use them.
