Lost a good guy

Last week I heard that a local guy had died suddenly but didn't hear any details. I found out today that he had bought a pile of a 4020 and was putting it back together after a motor overhaul, on the first start up it ran away and the flywheel exploded and killed him. He farmed and ran a paint shop on his farm, his son was helping him when it happened. His son was hurt, but not too bad. Very sad, he was a good mechanic, excellent painter and a good farmer and neighbor. He will be missed!!!

yikes thats bad. i will throw this out there... keep yourself a piece of plywood or something to plug the air intake to stop it , no otherway to get it stopped.

Happened around here a few years ago also, way I heard young guy early 30's, caught shrapnel also and was killed, father hurt and shop damaged also. Deere tractor also.

That is too bad--When we do a first start on a new build it is a 2 person adventure--1 to start it and the other to shut it down if needed. Do not depend on the fuel shutoff in the pump--if it has a external fuel shut of it will work but we go for the air shutoff.---Tee

I have a can of either in one hand and a clipboard for air shutoff in the other--this was 1st start on our 500 3 years ago.

(quoted from post at 20:13:39 02/09/21) A CO2 fire extinguisher works great to.

Yes a C02 extinguisher is an excellent way to stop a runaway. You can keep a relative distance from the engine, and only need to direct the spray/fog toward the intake. Another benefit is there is no mess after using it and having one around will also help fight fires.

Here we have half the injector lines loose to prevent an uncontrollable run away on a new rebuild or for a tractor that could have a stuck metering valve. Also before the first start the engine gets rolled over with injection lines all loose to test if fuel pump shut off is working.

Happened to a friend of mine a few years ago, 3020, something happened in the pump and ran off, instead of walking away and letting it go he tried to save it.
