Snap ring/retaining ring plier set

Mine are Snap-On and work pretty well. There are probably other manufacturers. Check the specifications and quality. Some of the tools don't do well with very large, strong retainers found in some tractor applications. This is a tool you'll only want to buy once, and you'll be rewarded, because, when you need it, it must work.

Can't tell you a name brand, but best to go with a name brand.

The market is flooded with Chinese crap! Best buy them from a store instead of online so you can take them back if misrepresented.

Avoid the convertible ones with the push button that reverses the action.

On the smaller ones, replaceable tips are an indication of poor quality, get the fixed sizes you need.

But weigh your planned use. Good sets are very expensive. No need to invest too much if you won't be using them regularly.

Yes, I got burned!

I just bought one at Napa. Cost $43 . Tool is well built with extra tips.

Vito

snap on is at the top, but mine are proto and thats as good as it gets, good quality. internal and external in one pliar.

I have a big convertable set with changeable ends to take snap rings off backhoe buckets. Quality set. Don't know brand but got the best ones our local auto parts store had. But for the flat snap rings without holes. I agree can't buy to good of pliers.

When you start looking at the really big snap ring pliers, like 4-6 and 8 inch size, try your Caterpillar dealer. Cheaper than anywhere else I found them. I like Proto as well for smaller rings.

Beagle.

I just bought a set of "ICON" ones from Harbor Freight. $79. Better than the Snap Ons that I borrowed from my friend that wouldn't do the job.

Dedicated internals and externals, nice tight joints.

Yes, the really big ones do have replaceable tips.

Got a big set I bought about 40 years ago to work on marine outdrives. Don't use them often anymore, but irreplaceable when needed!

For these tools buy from one of the tool trucks. Expensive in dollars but do the job better than cheap stuff. There are just some things I don't scrimp on.

Snap on for the HD ones , every tool maker has there strong and weak points . I have Mac , snap On Craftsman Proto . Each has a place , some modified for a certain job . Over time you learn who makes what .

Watch Ebay. I bought a set of the blue point which is what snap on sells for snap ring pliers and bought the whole set from there cheaper than off the truck. Might not get a warranty with them that way but enough cheaper they can be replaced if they break or malfunction. They look like those red ones shown on this subject onlt you have to unscrew them to go from inner to outer position with them.
