Key wont start tractor, nothing happens when you turn the key. You have to jump the starter for it to turn on. I recently replaced the battery and everything including positive and negative terminals are clean and in tact. I tried wiggling the wires attached to the key port but nothing happened. Any help will be great thanks.

Have you run a continuity test on the switch too see if it is
closing when you turn the key ? Any butt connectors or
crimped on connections on the key switch circuit ? Does it
have a neutral start safety switch on the tractor ?

I would check the neutral safety switch and it's wiring. I believe the switch is located on the top of the clutch housing

As already said, make sure Hi/Lo shift lever is in center for start safety switch to close the circuit. Switch is on the trans top, make sure the connections are good.

Is this tractor new to you? Most/all MFs have a neutral safety switch. The High Low range shifter must be in the neutral position(center) to start. Only by pass the neutral safety switch for testing, absolutely do not operate this tractor without an operational neutral safety switch. The keys do occasionally go bad. The power to all electrical including the starting comes off the positive solenoid post at the starter, Start there and trace.

I have a 285 and my first guess is the starter selenoid could new contacts. I have had to replace the contacts in mine .They were available from Napa but ? if avail today.

I have also had the wires on selenoid other than starter selenoid turn black and need alittle cleaning and cause em not to start.

No I've had the tractor for a long time. I will trace the wires from the solenoid when i get home today. Thank you

UPDATE: I just got around to responding to this thread. My mechanic came out and noticed the voltage meter reader was broken and replaced it with new wiring/gauge and it fixed the problem. I didn t expect a broken gauge would lead to this issue. Must have been a loose wire connection or ground problem.
