Hello, Im new to the sight Im working on a 1979 IH gas Tractor I just rebuilt the engine me and my good friends it runs great I prob have around maybe 30 hours on it. Anyway to the point I just rebuildt the generator on it hooked the wiring back up and I turn the key and nothing happens nothing at all happens as if the battery is not even hooked up. But the battery is hooked up and at full charge so I replaced the push start button and trying to replace the key switch the key switch is from rual king. I checked the voltage regulator Im lost Im not sure what else I can do unless I just start it with a screw driver on the starter

Use your meter or test light or even a jumper wire to find where you have voltage and where you don't. That will isolate the problem.

FWIW, the IH "424's" were made from 1964 to 1967.

Is that for sure the model # you are working with?

I have attached a link to the wiring diagrams for both the gas and diesel versions or the "424".

You can "follow the Volts" with a test light from the battery cable terminal on the starter solenoid to the junction black (red wire), from the juction block to the key switch (brown wire), and on to the "start" pushbutton (pink wire), then down to the "S" terminal on the starter solenoid (orange wire).

As always, be SURE the transmission is in "neutral" so if it should happen to suddenly crank while you are working with the "start" wiring no one gets run over!!!

I have a 464 IH you have to push the clutch pedal down before it will start you may have to check the wiring to the switch under the clutch pedal or the clutch pedal switch it's self. Dave F.

If he truly has a "424" and it hasn't been modified there's no "safety switch" on the clutch pedal.

O.K. one less thing to worry about. Dave F.

I'd start with cleaning each and every connection from the battery through the complete circuit for each circuit you work on. Then check with a test light.

On the topic of electricity.....I have a digital copy of an EXCELLENT book that goes through electrical troubleshooting that I would be happy to share with anyone who is interested. It is VERY well written and it explains things in layman's terms that are easy to follow.

I found that when I put my new push button switch in I noticed one of the contacts was making contact with metal so it was grounding its self out. So its fixed and all is working other the generator is still not charging while running I used a test light on the conections of the generator and nothing and I tested the same wires at the voltage regulator and nothing keep in mind I just rebuilt the generator and tested it before I hooked it back up and everything tested fine. So could the voltage regulator keep it from charging as well?
