Use or abuse--

It is no secret that a lot of tractor enthusiasts don't like tractor pullers for they think we ruin the tractors! In most cases this in farthest from the truth--most antique tractors used in pulling are salvage yard specials or behind the barn or fence row queens. They were discussing the 460-560 tractor in the Farmall forum and I got involved. I have always had a few old tractors but got serious about it 15-20 years ago. I always like standard treads so started buying a few with the intention of restoring them, but then what--they just sit their collecting dust, leaking fluids or draining batteries. I would sooner have a puller--you can go to pulls year-around and meet a lot of nice people-Well most of them. At the big antique pull in Tunica over $60,000 was raised for St. Jude's Hospital-How much would those pullers made with those old tractors if they were still sitting in the fence row? The old Case we fixed up and now pull came out of a salvage yard-It had a big white X painted on the side which meant it was heading for the smelter-sure we chopped and sawed and modified a lot of stuff on it to get it down to 4750 lbs. but which is better--giving it a second life as a puller, or watching it go by as a brand new Toyota????--That's all---Tee

Which line-up looks better?--This one?

Or this one--We got 4th out of 80 tractors

I like the first puller picture. Has several of the better shade of green! They don't sound like they are on their last leg.

Just kidding. Giving a second life as a (pulling) tractor is good. Otherwise, these would be melted down and return as a cheap (low quality) offshore automobile only to rust down in a very few years.

I have nothing against pulling. I just don't find any entertainment in it. Every time I see it advertised I just think what a waste of money. The only pulling I ever watched on utube was to watch trucks and tractors blow up. As far as your pictures,,,, The one with all those rusty tractors ,just something lovely about looking at all that history and rust.

I know that sounds weird but that's me, just love the look of old rusty iron.

I'm glad someone enjoys pulling as alot of people seem to love watching it. Pull on.

No matter how an old tractor is saved its a good thing,I know a few young folks that now collect tractors that got interested in the hobby because of tractor pulling.Nothing is a 'waste' of money if its the person's money they spend doing something they enjoy.

Made 395$ on my first time out tractor pulling ran against a case and a couple farmalls the kind that twoe 3 minutes to cough and spit and then finally the black smoke comes and the tire spin I took 3rd place on my 3020 powershift was on the mower the day before and on the sprayer the day after

Your right on Tee. My G was a rusted crankcase carcass when we started on it. Not worth it's weight for scrap at that time. Sandblasted it and put as many good reusable parts as we could find back in it and made a lot of new stuff for it also. Runs decent now anyway. See you in Waterloo. COOKIES? Mel

I have no problem makeing a 'puller' out of a fence row tractor that woud otherwise just rust into the mud or get hauled in for scrap. I've done that too with my 'hot rod' F12. However I dont like it when a perfectly good tractor is butchered into a 'puller'. But,It's not my tractor. So the owner can do whatever....

Big Tee I only did farm stock pulling. Gets my heart going and brings back memories of my dad and neighbors who are all gone now. My friend Randy always liked the green and yellow His in styled G was a pulling beast. He found the old GP in the weeds back in the 80’s My 2 year old White American I got 2nd place. 1950T I got 5th. Good times for me drove my 1650 an hour and twenty minutes to a pull and got first.

Very well said. I think the people involved
with pulling are just a great bunch of people
and do as much to keep old iron out of the
scrap yard as collectors do_Of course, you
had to add Mel's photo in there and mess up
the whole post. HE HE!!

It's your do as you please. Someone gave me crap for painting my axels black, told them it's mine and I don't give a rats azz what they think. There's a 5020 close by on auction time that would make a good puller, if you buy it I can keep it here till you can make over to pick it up.

I am going to paint the axles and hubs hot pink on both my tractors just to p** of the Facebook correct police 🚔

Hey Mel--Did you ever get that "G" fixed or is it still only hitting on TWO?????--Looks GOOD---Tee

Haven't seen that one in a long time--I like it!! Like my ol pulling buddy from Colorado Bill Bear told me--"I know the SOB is cheating cause I'm cheating and he beats me"--Thanks---Tee

Removed the green paint from the grilles? I assume you did that because of night glare when using lights. I painted the top of the hood on my cx-100 Case flat black because of night glare on the red paint. Wife said--how you going to sell it when the time comes? I don't care. If they don't like it, they don't have to buy it.

Never understood what the draw of pulling is! Seems to me all that money wasted on pulling could be used to restore the other ones.
To each his own, but I call it abuse...

I am fine with the people that pull tractors.

I would think about doing it if I could put computer on engine.

A tablet is considered a computer.

I bet there is a spot on the top of engine were you could duct tape it on and you would be golden.

Pulling in the antique classes isn't really a spectator sport. Would it be more interesting described as chess on a tractor?

That's what pulling is to me. The challenge of the competition, did I get the weights right, did I pick the right line down the track? Right gear?

There's a whole lot to think about when you compete in a pull. What do you do with a restored tractor? Dust it? For the most part these old tractors don't serve a practical purpose any more.

Tractors used in farming are pulling heavy loads such as plows, chisels, disks, all day long. A pulling tractor has a heavy load on the pulling track for only a minute or so. Tractors were made to pull heavy loads all day long.

You think there's not. I happen to love pulling old tractors. It's the competition. I love it. I go to sleep every night thinking how to improve. I'm narrowing my D17 20" and lighting it 100 lbs. Trying for 3750 lb. Keeps my mind sharp. Kinda.

Jealous? I can't keep him off it at a pull. He dreams about waving to his admiring fans after a full pull on the G.

I've been to pulls and shows but never got into it. Met a lot of nice people. Fun to see the ingenuity that people use to build the higher division tractors.

Certainly better than melting it down for harbor freight tools.

I think there's still plenty of examples of stock tractors to balance the modifieds. It's not like taking a Yenko Chevelle and making a dirt car out of it.

I think the abuse comment on the IH board was more from the standpoint of taking the machine well beyond what the engineers had in mind in terms of power handling and ultimate strength. But that's competitive sports; you push and take risks in order to stay in front of the competition.

I could feel the seat sizzling--it was like throwing Holy Water on a vampire---Tee

I never got the pulling bug. Nor could I of afforded to ! It is amazing what they can get this old stuff to do and still hold together.
