Feral/wild hogs

Read an article in last east “Garden & Gun” magazine with recipes for wild hog. Got me to thinking, we don’t seem to have them this area in central Va.
Who has experience with them?

There are wild hogs Southeast of Culpeper in the Blackjack swamp, pretty much between US 522 and US 15,none have made it across the Rapidan into Orange or Madison Counties last I heard and hope they don't if they ever got established in the mountains we'd never get rid of them especially up in the Park where there is no hunting.

I am in Leon county Texas. This last year was not so bad.But in 2019 they were all over the place. Shoot on site is the order in this county.

We have the second highest population here in Florida only surpassed by Texas. Can be hunted year round with no license needed. They are devastating to crops, yards, pastures, other animals. They are not native but brought here by the Spanish and have flourished ever since.

They are mostly a russian cross and very aggressive and breed like rabbits. We used to hunt and catch them when I lived in Florida, They didn't taste very good unless you fed them for a couple weeks before butchering them. Most just shoot and leave them now. I have heard some Ranches are over run with them in Texas but won't let others hunt them because they are afraid of enviro Nazi's

I'm not sure where you heard about ranchers not wanting them shot. They are even hunted from helicopters although as fast as they breed hunting will not control them. There has been research on feeders that recognize the sound of grunts that will open to allow the hogs at poisoned food but not deer of cattle. Some counties have a bounty on them. They are worse than fire ants. As for eating them younger ones are fine and make excellent sausage. And tamales.

I'm in East Texas and it's a year-round project. Hobby hog hunters with dogs are on routes, invited to hunt somebody's different place every weekend of the year. Professional outfits get hired to build nets that drop on a group by remote control. Everyone that has anything is always trying to trap and shoot every hog possible but more always come in. We make great eating out of the sows if they're in good shape, BBQ from the small ones, and drag off the boars.

Pile 'em up for the Texas buzzards!

I like that picture, the best thing a guy can do with a wild hog. I've had them butcher and made into sausage, cost is not inline for what you get, besides they are not free from stuff that might cause harm. I've killed them from my front porch. But right now, maybe they finely got the message, they are staying out of my yard.

You are correct about Florida! I've probably shot well over 200 in the last few years here in central Florida. Shot 3 a couple of weeks ago at a good friends house off of his back porch just after dark. We do
that about once a month. Sit on the porch after dinner with a after dinner refreshment and see how many we can get with a AR in 300 Blackout with a thermal scope. Parts of his nicely manicured lawn looks like
you pulled a two bottom plow across it. We will never get rid of the wild hogs here in Florida.

Don't worry, if you are in a rural area, some dumbazz will trap some somewhere, transport them to a place near you and release them into the wild. Has happened hundreds of time on purpose.

Ranchers not wanting them eradicated by volunteer hunters because they are trying to make some money selling the hunts.
