Coldest Start Yet

Had the coldest start for the JD 2140 yesterday. I needed to put a hay bale out and the stacks were pretty drifted in. I don't think the Massey would have got through with a bale on the front so I plugged in the 2140 for about 3 hours. It did ok. The snow blower cleared a trail and that extra 600 or so pounds it adds to the driving wheels really helps get around with a bale on the front. It turned out to be a pretty busy and strenuous day but we all survived.

Cold Calf Start

Is that -31 with wind chill,or just the temp? We are looking at the cold here for the next few days there saying -15 to -20 but thats with the wind chill. I dident know you left MN.

(quoted from post at 20:45:31 01/27/21) Another enjoyable video. Thank you!!
Thanks for watching folks. It was actually -37F here Sunday morning so when it was only -25F yesterday , that was an improvement. :) Cattle are ok long as they can get out of the wind which is just one of the reasons I like a lot of trees around. Once those little calves are dried off and fed they can stand the cold just fine. I'm keeping that pair in the barn for a few days until the weather improves a little. I've got room and don't mind a little extra work.

I’d be inclined to give that old Bull some vacation time in June and July, maybe August too , spent in the corral ringed with electric fence, and cut out those cold weather calves. A good mama cow that licks her calf off good, and gets the new calf up and sucking will do fine in cold weather, but if it’s a heifer that drops her calf and walks off and doesn’t know any better, cold weather can be a curse. Best part of cold weather calving is there’s no mud !

I'm down here in N. Texas and always liked spring calves for warmer temps and tender spring grasses. My hat goes off to the folks and animals like yourself that brave the Northern winters.

Actual temperature, usually when it gets cold the wind dies down, I just looked at the current weather , and it's -16, but only 2 mph wind. Overall, N MN has had a very mild winter, and very little snow. Still glad we're in AZ, but will be home in MN by April first, we have 1500 more trees to plant.

I know you like the exercise, but clamp on bucket forks would sure save you exposure time dealing with rd. bales. They are not that expensive......The red bull marked that calf pretty well. Enjoyed the video.
