Can't be good!!

A neighbor ask me to replace the spider joints in the front axle of his Case 570LXT. Did the left side first just because it was closest to the work bench. When I drained that hub not much oil came out, but some. When I did the right side I decided to separate the hub cover to drain it that way. The one picture shows what drained out sorta. The other picture shows the planetary. Ya gotta hate it when this happens.

I used to turn wrenches in a factory that had a few Allis-Chalmer forklifts that used a like planetary. They also broke in a similar way. Sometimes, it just happens.

Well it is POSSIBLE that there was a catastrophic seal failure allowing the oil to drain so quickly that no one could be faulted for not noticing it.

landini tractors were like that. you could never tell they leaked much but if you failed to fill up every 6-9 months gone was the planetary.
I did mine once and so did my brother in law. crazy thing was I had my tractor over a year and there was only a drop or 2 of oil on the casting ever. no dirty or streaks like a normal leak would cause. was almost like it evaporated.

Those Carraro axles were used in several brands, Case, Ford, JD
Neighbors Ford 5030 had the right side hub lock up, left side hub was full of oil, right side was dry, no sign of leakage.
I ask when he last checked oil in the hubs and front axle, said he had never checked them.
The gears were chewed up but I was able to reuse the outer housing, the inner wheel bearing had came apart locking up the wheel, check the outer ring gear as his had a cracked tooth.
A local machine shop was able to weld up and repair the hub and spindle but it still ended up costing him over $1500 in parts and machine shop work.

With the hub dry like that you'd best pull the hub and check the bearings, I doubt they look much better.
