V belt sizes

I have a Weasler 6" v belt pulley and a Don Dye 10.5" pulley. The Don Dye pulley has part number DC-168 and their catalog says that it is a pulley for a C belt. Weasler does not even give a belt type for their pulley. I was planning to put the 10.5 pulley on the belt pulley shaft of an Allis Chalmers CA and the 6 inch one on the center pulley of a John Deere three bladed mower. What belt size and or type should I use. I will have to mount some idler pulleys to turn the belt 90 degrees.

I would contact vbeltsupply.com, they have been a great resource for me. Great product and great price.

I don't know about the CA, but the B & C belt pulley shafts are tapered. So not just any pulley will work. Assuming you can use the larger drive pulley, I would use the C size belt with it. Can you hold the other pulley up to the bigger one and determine that it will take a C belt?

You can probably run a B belt in a C pulley, as long as it doesn't rude on the bottom, it will work.

It can even be an advantage to help keep it from throwing in a less than perfect alignment as mower decks often are.

But you can not run a C belt on a B pulley, it will sit too high.

Here are the dimensions for all the standard belt cross sections. With some careful measurements you can pretty well see where it will run.

When you do get something worked out or even as you are designing it, be sure the belt you need is available. Not all sizes are made. And on a letter series belt the number is pitch length, not tape measure length. Order carefully!

Once you get everything fabed and aligned and find the best belt length, you will get longer life with a Kevlar belt.

540 RPM PTO X 10.5" sheave / 6" sheave will give you about 945 RPM's at the mower spindle, less than half the speed it needs to run.

A friend has a "similar in configuration" 72" DEERE belly mower for his "850" DEERE tractor, there's a 90º gearbox that slips on the PTO. then a HUGE sheave that drives the mower. The gearbox increases the speed considerably ahead of the sheave.

A few months ago I figured out the ratios but (of course) didn't keep the details where I can find them.

If you would like I could figure it out again and post back for you.
