Cheap screw drivers

What are they such a piece of crap ? They have such a sharp point on the Phillips that they can’t get down in and get ahold of the screw

When K-Mart sold out locally, i bought a set of Craftsman,i dint need them, i had plenty, but there the ones with the black handle, but they had marked them up before they started the sale, but anyway, they are better then the average china one's !! I like em!!

Yes FF. I have one of them Craftsman. You mean the ones with the ergonomically shaped handle right? Best phillips I've ever had.

I had a set of matco screwdrivers that I paid 80$ for on sale and a snap on set of small screw drivers and they were amazing but I have ah awful hard time paying that much again

(quoted from post at 22:55:30 01/18/21) The problem is China, the solution is snap-on.

The problem originated in Canada. Peter Roberston of Robertson Screw Co. invented it based upon a British design and patented it in Canada in 1907. It was used at Henry Ford's Windsor, Ontario auto plants. Ford wanted to use it at his American plants but Robertson was stubborn and he refused. Then John Thompson redesigned it and got an American patent in 1933 and 1934. He couldn't get anyone to use it so he sold it to Henry Phillips in 1935 who redesigned Thompson's and got a new American patent. In 1936 Phillips got General Motors and everyone else to use it in the US. So then we end up with differing designs being used with the Phillips in America and the Robertson screw in Canada and also adopted by Japan which has become a problem today. The Robertson screw is faster and has less cam-out (will tighten up without twisting out of the thread). However American manufacturers wanted more cam-out so they had less chance of being over tightened during the manufacturing process. Go figure. So even though a screw and screwdriver may be labeled Phillips, it may or may not be.

As an aside, I use nothing but Torx head T-25 screws now.

I might add that the Phillips screwdrivers have a more pointed tip so you have to hold them down tighter in the screw and come in 7 sizes from #000 to #3. Robertson screwdrivers have more of a square to them and flatter so they fit into the screw easier but can get stuck in the screw (almost like a square head). The Robertson comes in 5 sizes #00 to #3. Robertson's are easier to use with one hand and the Phillips can need two as one has to push down.

(quoted from post at 00:12:47 01/19/21) I will have to look for a Robertson set

From what I'm reading now, it looks like the Robertson is basically the square head. I see some screws that are a combination that will take both types of drivers.

I’m looking at these screws I was just trying to get out and
they are mostly square and not much depth to them At all

Here is the history of the screw. About 28 variations depending upon the use and industry.

Good tools aren't cheap and cheap tools aren't good is what a Snap On guy told me one time. Guess what, He was right

I have Mac #1 and #2 Phillips screwdrivers that I bought 40 years ago. They're the ones I use if I think a screw isn't going to cooperate. They still work like new.

My go to is Vessel

Megadora 980 Impacta P2x100 #2 Cross Point Impact Screwdriver.

Uniquely designed screwdriver and impact driver in one
Fits #2 Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) and US Phillips screws
Proprietary cam mechanism rotates the shaft 12 degrees with each hammer strike
Magnetized black coated tip

Its a must when working on Asian cars it fits Phillips as well. JIS another issue thrown into the mix...

I have snap-on, Mac, Matco, SK and GEARWRENCH I use the GEARWRENCH 6 Pc. Phillips/Slotted Dual Material Screwdriver Set - 80050 95% of the time. When going after a Phillips I grab a grearwrench and a Vessel. The Vessel will get what the others will not fit well no matter what style they are. Its rare I have to hit the Vessel with a hammer when I have to its a life saver.

Why so many, in my trade it takes quite a few lengths from 9" up to 28" to get'er done... Add a Vessel to the litter it will impress ya...

So many tools so little time : )

Can't say about all cheap screwdrivers, I use the HF screwdrivers and they work as well as any. I'm wondering if you are using a #1 philips where a #2 is needed. Same could be true where a #2 is used where a #3 screwdriver is needed.

I agree if there was ever a product that is over hyped and over priced snap on is it. Are they good maybe so but extremely over priced. Used to be 3 trucks in our area now down to one and he is struggling, folks have finally figured out their is a choice and some folks offer a good tool as less price

Those are Japanese JIS screwdrivers, not Phillips, even if they are mislabeled as Phillips.

JIS has a much "pointyer" tip.

Why did you buy cheap screwdrivers in the firs place?

A lot of the cheap ones are reed and prince or Jis. Look sorta the same but different geometry. Just depends on what the off shore factory had in hand to copy.

I buy the HF screw drivers with the full bolster, they even have a hex head at the top for a wrench. Hey, I know I will be driving them in somewhere.(not recommended for electricity work though)

JIS is not as sharp pointed as a standard phillips.
New #2 snap-on phillips on the left Vessel JSI on the right.

New #2 sheet rock screw with new snap-on #2 phillips stood in screw, screwdriver want to fall out of it no bite to it.
