John Deere 45 combine

Just bought a John Deere 45 Combine with the 145 gas motor it's really hard starting I was wondering about putting on a electric fuel pump on it but it looks like there's different pressure and flow rate anyone know what electric pump I would need to use thanks

Does it have a mechanical pump?

Can it be bought?

Easy to check the existing pump, disconnect the line from the carb, direct it to a container, crank the engine, see if it pumps.

Usually hard starting is caused by weak spark or the choke is not fully closing.

If you do go with an electric pump, it must be a very low pressure, like 2 PSI, otherwise it will override the needle valve and flood.

Personally, I detest them! Should be used only as an absolute last resort, and wired with a safety circuit to stop the pump when the engine is not running.

I have a 45 combine as well . Really wish it had a grain head instead of a stupid corn head

Our 45 had a hand primer pump that you had to work before starting. It was by the tank and you had to leave the handle in the correct position. It had a Hercules, in heavy grain it worked hard. Fill with gas add oil and water.

But on something like this where the tank is way below the engine, an electric pump can be your best friend. Likewise, on many pieces of equipment which set unused for long periods of time. I've installed a few, wired them to the coil, turn the key on and wait a few seconds, then start without running the battery dead!

Shouldn't that have a check valve in the fuel line to keep the fuel line full when shut off?? I've been around several older combines with the tank lower than the motor and they all would start easy. What have you checked out? Are you sure that the fuel is leaking back down or do you have another problem causing the hard start. If you absolutely have to have an electric fuel pump, MF 300's had an electric pump on them. That would pump fuel with the correct pressure. Chris

The first SP combine I ever ran--Dad had a 30 pull type and bought this 45 when I went in the Navy--Had a 3 row corn head---Tee

In that situation, you could put the electric pump down by the tank, run a desperate line and tee it into the original line between the pump and carb.

Then put a momentary switch on the pump, and it would only be used as a pre primer to fill the carb bowl on start up.

Now you're getting into aircraft! My low wing Piper has both a mechanical and electric fuel pump. On take off and landing the electric fuel pump is on.

And yes, a beauty of the electric pump is it can be placed close to the source. Seems like most everything today, both gas and diesel, has an electric fuel pump.

The later model 5 series gas combines had electric fuel pumps. When the camshaft lobe for the fuel pump got a little wear on it the fuel pump could not suck gas up to the engine at idle and cranking speeds. It did OK at speed but not at idle. I had to put an electric pump on a 105 I had because of this.

Do you remember what type of pump you
used and did you put a back check valve
coming out at the gas tank so the fuel
didn't drain back down thanks

SV my neighbors sits on the edge of the field with a grain head. I have posted photos of it before I guess I’ll have to take some more!

SV I used the search box and can’t find any Deere combine pictures . I may be wrong on the number maybe a 40 round back. I remember seeing him combine oats with it when I first moved over here in 98.
