I have a gas 2510 that seems to eat mufflers. They only last a few years, I'm sure not 300 hours. It has always been this way. OEM JD mufflers seem to be the quietest and last the longest, but not very long, I have bought Stanley mufflers didn't last very long either. Its just a chore tractor gets used maybe 100hours a year. They start to leak around the top. The tractor is always inside. Anybody know of a better brand? Thanks Jim

That is interesting as the muffler on my 2510 diesel is about 20 years old and the one on my 2510 gas is old as well. I hate how the aftermarket ones make them sound. Years ago dad cut the hood on his 2510 gas and installed a 2020 muffler. Tom

IS there any chance the engine timing is a bit off, making for higher than normal exhaust temperatures??

Seems like most of the younger crowd like to go with straight pipes and no muffler at all. You must be old like me ad still appreciate a muffler on a tractor. I find mine last a long time. I mean decades, not just years.

Usually a muffler that rusts out is a result of short trips where it never gets hot enough to evaporate the condensation. Not much you can do about that if that is the nature of the work.
Possibly, and it would be a considerable amount of work, but if you have the facilities to DIY, buy a new JD muffler, and reinforce it in the typical failure areas by welding in extra metal.

Here is a thought...
Thanks to the advent of catalytic converters and unleaded gas, most automobile exhaust systems are made of stainless steel. Most exhaust systems will outlast the car they were originally installed on. You might want to look into getting a used muffler out of a junkyard and adapting it to your tractor. It will probably be quieter and last longer.
