Allis Chalmers Field Cultivator

I was watching one of the Allis Chalmers videos on youtube about their field cultivator. I've never seen one of that brand. The video discussed the elastomer clamp they used for cushioning. The field cultivators I've seen all used springs or hydraulics for cushioning and tripping. Did the AC design hold up? Did it ever get wide spread usage among other brands?

My brother had one,it was pretty much a joke,it was ok in plowing or soft ground but if it got in anything else it would jump from left to right, it was bad news, I think the one my brother bought was the only one the dealer ever sold, and i think it was the dealers Demo!

The rubber shock absorbers. They sold fairly well around here as they were cheaper than IH's vibra-shank. I know of at least two that are still around.

The shanks did not move up and down nearly far enough to do a good job of leveling rougher ground. A shank would be plowing deep one moment then a few feet down the line it would be out of the ground. If a person wanted to plow with it the cultivator would go deep because the shanks did not pull back but a cultivator is not designed to plow.

I bought one new in the late 70's a 17 ft model 1200. Never had to replace a rubber tine mount- shock. I used this machine for 35 years and I can't say it was a bad machine. Sure it needed some repair like any other machine. Only reason I got rid of was it I went to no-till. It is a field cultivator Not a chisel plow.

The Allis video I watched said the main reason they designed and built them was to make them run quiet and allow for side to side movement for soil shattering. Did yours run quiet?

A couple neighbors had one each and they seemed fairly good. They were built at a time when nearly all farmers plowed their ground. They like most of their contemporary competition will not handle much trash or or unplowed ground.
