Bearing trick - anybody try it?

So a random YouTube video popped into my feed tonight and it just seems to easy. Anybody try it?

For anybody not watching it on YouTube, basically the guy microwaved a bearing and got the clearance he needed.
Nuke a bearing

Pretty sure a microwave won't heat a bearing! They make induction heaters specifically for heating bearings, for big bearings we had an oven big enough to drive a forklift in!

been doing that all the time at work. stick in in the welding oven and get the brg. about 280 degree's with a heat gun . pick it up with welding mits and drop it on the shaft. not small brgs. either. these are in the 8"to 12" diameter. and to get them off warm the brg. up and she falls off.

In the field we used a clip light with an aluminium shade and a 100 watt bulb. It took a while but bearings would get super hot. After coffee break-good to go. I don't think you can buy incandescent bulbs at 100 watts anymore. Oh well, most of my skills are obsolete.

NO. most times i cant stand watching those video's . they are yacking about simple stuff that i know. and when i want to find a problem they dont know it either. and heating a brg. is old news.

Never used a microwave, but have heated bearings in the oven for years. Also - sticking races in the freezer over night helps them to install easier....

Yes I’ve used a microwave box it in a cardboard box and wrap the bearing good in paper and it works fine . The frying pan works better though I think it doesn’t instantly get hot although I’ve never had a microwaved bearing fail

(quoted from post at 21:25:51 01/06/21) I keep an electric fry pan in the shop. Add a little oil and -

Heck YA, and a little canola oil and cook some hash browns while the skillet is ho!

Fine, go ahead say it. Watched it now and what is the trick? I didn’t see any tricks. I will keep heating them slow in a real oven. And not wrapping a new brg. In water. Watching the news now, and your president is a bigger character. Ha ha

It was the lefts god given right to protest two days ago while blm was burning police cars and buildings and demanding the police be defunded that was wonderful but now it’s the end of the world ? Strange isn’t it ?

I don't know about 100 watters, but the 250 watt heat lamps will work fine. They even keep the dog warm at night. TDF

a guy at work bought a fry daddy electric deep fryer to heat parts, about week later HR was all over him! IT took his union rep and some high level management to convince HR is was actually for work not for personal use. I work great for what they were doing in their lab,i used it once to heat a dyno bearing. (same HR that drug me over the coal because a P.O. came in for an Allis Chalmers electric motor repair. I was told allis was tractor and since I was a farmer I was doing something personal on company expense)

A bunch of y'all are missing the point. Sure it's easy when you're in a commercial shop and have the dedicated equipment on hand to heat the bearing, but what if you AREN'T?

The wife is not going to take kindly to her deep fryer being filled with 10W40 and used as a bearing heater, or any of her pans, or her stovetop being used to heat those pans, or the inevitable mess you make in the process. You probably agree. It's a waste. That fryer is now no longer any good for anything but heating bearings. That pan is now no longer good for anything but heating bearings.

This is a quick easy safe hack that doesn't waste anything more than a few paper towels when you just need to install one bearing. No muss, no fuss.

Very interesting point. My parents use to put coffee cups in microwave that has metal in lay on them. Breaking the microwave all the time. Loke most older people in the 80's I had to explain to them that they broke the microwave. This is interesting to see and hear the guys explaining that it will not hurt the microwave. I usually have done it they old fashion way.

Only a commercial shop can afford an electric frypan? I think I paid $2.50 at a yard sale. It is my pan not Momma’s. She doesn’t care what I use it for.

We got grilled, by the brass, because we had a football and a basket ball in our fleet shop. We would deflate them, put them inside of vehicle doors, and fenders, and inflate them to push out dents.

We used to use a toaster oven and tempature pens.
I suppose you could use one of those "ray-gun"
thermometers now.
