Were these old steamers as noisy as they looked to be? How about weight? Did you have a problem with soil compaction or getting stuck with them?

Engine wise pretty quit with no load, you had the "bark" from the stack under load.
The straight cut open gears were a little noisy when mobile.
What would really get your attention was the steam whistle.

Your riding lawn mower makes more noise than my Buffalo Pitts under a heavy load. Idling in the back yard, all you can hear
is the ratchet of the oil pump. Driving down the road, you'll hear the clatter of the gears first. The whistle, on the
other hand, has been heard 4 miles away as the crow flies, on the right day.

Check one out one day. You'll think twice about buying another internal combustion tractor in the future : )

At "Rough and Tumble Thresherman's reunion in Kinsers PA steamers roam around the grounds. As Qufan said they are very quiet with no load. They can sneak up behind you. I recommend that show highly.

I've always been fascinated by how quiet those things are. You'll see one sitting at a show all belted up to a threshing machine. The guy gets on it to start it up. You expect to hear an engine rev up. Instead, he just moves a lever and suddenly everything is turning! No more noisier than it was two minutes ago! That always amazes me no matter how many times I've seen it.
