I am 6 ft. 183 and will be 76 on Tue. and very active. Have had this problem for many years. In our Family...Been on 3 different meds for many years.
You folks have any things you are using to keep in in a good number??? Any home remedies that seem to work for you???

I take BP medicine, keeps mine right in line, my dad had stroke due to BP and not wanting to take meds.

You need to let your doctor come up with some meds that help you. . Also buy your own blood pressure monitor , they are less than $100 and very easy to use. I keep track for a month and my doctor looks at the results then he decides on medication. Don't fool around , high blood pressure can kill you !

Michael--I have a monitor and use it and have been on meds for over 40 years--never miss a day--take my 3 pills EVERY DAY. Just hate to have to go with more meds---that is the reason for my question...................some folks drink beet juice................

I think staying well hydrated and get plenty of exercise helps as much as anything.

What is your BP while on meds?

Do you not have a doctor?? I had borderline high blood pressure since I was in my 20's, Drs always kept an eye on it and finally in my 40's they said that I needed to be on blood pressure medication. Started me on 10mg Lysinopril and that worked OK till a couple years ago. They upped it to 20mg and blood pressure is fine now. The medicine is cheap, just a few bucks for 3 months worth. I'm surprised that your Dr doesn't have you on something. A tablespoon of white vinegar a day is supposed to help with blood pressure but I just can't stand it, I'd rather take a pill.

My doctor has me on -----3-----MEDS for over 40 years. Just hate to have to go for a fourth medical pill...reason for my question...............

First: Your doctor. Any advice other than your doctor is not good advice.
Second: Your Doctor. Repeat "First", above.
Third: Your Doctor. Repeat, "First and Second", above.
Forth: If you don't like First, Second or Third, find a new doctor.

Garlic supplement or real thing if your friends and family can
stand to be around you.

My dad took garlic every day Lived to be 92 before the big C got em.

Look up garlic benefits.

I have had high blood pressure for many years and take medicine regularly each day and it stays good.
My doctor once told me that that I needed to be very careful when taking the various remedies for cold and flu this time of the year. Some of them will really elevate it. She advised against Alka-Seltzer cold product for that reason.

One of my classmates had high blood pressure, 70 years old, didn't do anything about it. He was still driving truck, don't know how he could pass the physicals! Shortly after he got home one day he had a bad stroke, could of been a lot worse if he was rolling down the highway with a GVW of 80,000! Anyhow, he's pretty much done doing anything, may never walk again. So, if you have high BP, take care of it!

I’ve had high blood pressure for about 25 years. Doc told me it’s was probably 50% hereditary and 50% job related. I’ve been on a generic form of Ziac all that time. I’ll be 71 next month. I’m 6’, 240 lbs, I walk my dog about 3 miles a day. Quit using regular salt, went to sea salt. My blood pressure is usually around 130/70. Doc says keep it up. Listen to your doctors advice. Good luck.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a physician.

My height and weight are comparable to yours, my age is 61. I agree with the others, do what your doctor says, but might talk to he/she about some other medications that do not require as much daily. I take Lisonpryl and it works very well for me, My BP will run in the 110/60s, which is very good. I think sometimes it gets a little low.

My dad's BP was extremely high, he would judge how much medication he took based on how he felt, and it led to a stroke. I am hoping that mine stays controlled, it has for the last ten years. I sold my business in 2020 and the reduced stress brought my BP down, so stress plays a big part. I do not get enough exercise, as I work outside, but do not work out.

I am lucky as I have a physician that is very good to talk with, would recommend that you find another if that is not the same.

David G. I like my doctor and he is very good. I take 3 MEDS and trying not to have to go to a 4th. I lost my wife of just shy of 51 years of marriage--knew her for over 65 years--neighbor kids. 10-29-2019...I miss HER terribly and I may be under more stress than I really know....Thanks for that idea......

Is your doctor a heart doctor? Regardless I would get a second opinion from a heart specialist for sure. Never hurts to get a second opinion. Your existing doctor should not have a problem with that.

Some days it feels as though the doctors are just throwing a dart at the dart board.

Been trying to lower BP for 4 months now. First med had a minor effect, but made me sick as a dog. Second one no effect, higher dose of second one - BP went up if anything. Next is ???

At least I will probably get a new Doc soon. If you are a middle aged white male here you get whoever is left for appointments. Rarely see the same one more than twice.

Tractor doctors don't make very good human doctors. Many of them can't read very well as you told us that you have a doctor and 3 active prescriptions but were trying to avoid a 4th. Some missed that pertinent information from your initial post. Maybe its time for a RE-EVALUATION of your medical condition. Maybe a new doctor is your answer. gobble

Get a good dog and mostly ignore the women in your life .

Humour aside . Take the meds your physician prescribes , get down to your ideal weight and do some regular cardio exercise . If your physician approves .

Try to avoid Lisinopril. It's derived from snake venom. Made me cough till my head hurt. Got switched to Valsartin. Probably no better for ya, but the cough is gone.

There are heart and cancer issues in my family. I breath deeply as I think of it. Empty your lungs and breath in, keep your nostrils open and inhalate as able. Expand your lungs and if you are able to control the out flow,do so slowly as able allow your breath to escape all the way and totally empty your lungs. Exercise breathing the same as walking the dog. The efficiency with which we are able to breath allows us to feed our anatomy with air and oxygen and to feed our cell structure with a necessary component, oxygen. As far as the pump goes and the pressure it can stand? Hey ho hum me oh my, I've been fooling people into thinking I can pound a nail somewhat where they want it for a few years, an't no doc but logic says cut down on the volume of mass your trying to take care of. We eat a lot of carbs and stuff that takes a fair bit of time to digest all the time working our system. I like to eat and therefore eat what goes through quickly, ergo cut back on carbs and heavy protein. Your mission Ladies and gentlemen, should you decide to accept it, is to live long healthy and happy lives so we aren't a drag on anyone especially our families, for as long as possible any way.

I've been on BP meds for 20+ years, low dose has worked with no problem.

But something has happened in the last couple years, it's gone up and up, more and more pills, it's still uncontrolled. The side effects are terrible, dry mouth, groggy.

Now it's turned into edema and short breath. I'm going back to the doc this week.

I asked to see a specialist a couple years ago, he sent me to one that had such broken English there was no communication, he was a total jerk, I left.

Guess I'll try another one, I seriously distrust them all. Went through this with mom, dealing with their arrogance and lack of communication only increases the stress!

My blood pressure goes up and down, doctor doesn't seem to think I need medicine. Probably doesn't make any difference as I am dying from cancer anyway.

One question, do you eat black licorice? Known to be a problem for high blood pressure patients. I discussed this with Dr. at Mayo Clinic after doing some research on it years ago. He said it was Mayo that did the studies.

Excellent advice; one good dog for every prescribed medication.

Lysinopril made me cough, and it took a year after i quit it,for the cough to stop! You know what that' made out of ???

Sir, you're not likely to find a home remedy. Life style and diet can be of benefit but treating hypertension is not for amateurs. Hypertension is a silent killer. Between you and your Dr. you can find the solution. Looking forward to hearing from you for a long time. Michael

Having the condition myself, my tip is consult your doctor and at least consider his advice in addition to home remedies or what anyone here on a tractor forum might offer, be they lay persons or trained physicians absent a thorough in person examination. Is there a doctor in the house ??? Geeeeeeeee it used to be Electrical or Legal questions that drew out the most opinions, now medical questions have take over lol...

Best wishes take care of yourself that condition can be a killer !!

Divorcee did a lot to lower my high BP,also stay off the junk/processed foods, limit meat consumption especially pork, cut out salt.A lot of spices will help lower BP.

Do you check it at home?
Mine is fine at home, always high at Doc's office.
They understand that and don't fuss at me about it.

Most likely it is due partially to heredity, but only partially. I am 72, and active but have never had high BP. Over the last three years I have lost 45 lbs. due to my wife's new interest in diet. Her mantra is low carb, low sugar and fasting. She recommends a book by Dr. Jason Fung.

That is called "white coat syndrome". I had knee surgery several years ago, well decades now. The nurse told me that my blood pressure was high, but my heart rate was fine. I asked what the numbers were, and she told me the heart rate was low 70s. I laughed and said my normal heart rate was low 50s. The gave me something t address my anxiousness and my blood pressure was fine after that.

Just like meds, might have to try several before you find the good ones.

My "problem" is low blood pressure.
Inherit that from mom.

Been on blood pressure meds since I was about 60. Runs in my family, also. Watch your weight, take it easy on the salt, and take the meds. Was on Lysynopril for years. Am using losarten right now. Not sure about the spelling.

How old is your doctor?
Many older doctors seem to not keep up on the latest developments in medicine. Just like us, they also get stuck in their ways.
Especially non specialists.
Maybe you need to go see a specialist?

Why is your doc looking at anothe or 4th med. 128: 83 is a reasonable level for anybody. Mine is about that at 5' 6" 300 neverhave worried to much about it . I'll be 62 next month. I feel fine and take no medication for anything. Mine always goes up at the docs office and goes back down at home. Wife can verify that. She takes mine and says your dead. 110-120:60-70.

Healthy blood pressure in adults is a reading below 120 systolic and 80 diastolic. Blood pressure between 120 to 129 systolic and under 80 diastolic is considered elevated. Elevated blood pressure means you have a greater risk of developing high blood pressure later on.

Watch goldfish. Listen to a two lunger John Deere at idle or near idle. I sold a JD 60 to a guy that had a real blood pressure problem. His neighbor said he would let it sit and idle right out his door for hours at a time each morning.

(quoted from post at 11:28:39 01/05/21) I never use salt I am 65 Doc says I have blood pressure of an 18 year old . No salt !

Well Dr. that depends on the overall diet. Processed foods contained great amounts of salt which is way more than is healthy for you. If the processed foods are reduced to very low levels there is likely to be a deficiency of salt which would need to be made up. This is the case in my wife's and my diet but most people get way too much.

Our doctor says that the 120 / 80 standard was established by research on healthy 30 year old people. For my 80 year old 110 lb wife, the doctor is happy with anything below 160 / 85 and taking no medications whatsoever. Moreover some people's BP varies a lot during a day, even when not very active. Also, it is best to not take just one reading, but 2 or 3 readings separated by one or two minutes and then settling on the lowest of the readings.
For example, here are some actual readings (3 readings separated by 2 minutes) from my wife taken one day at 8 am and then again at 9 am in the order Systolic Diastolic Heart Rate:

08:00:00
159 75 72
145 72 72
141 70 70

09:00:00
142 64 73
130 57 74
126 56 73

Her numbers were much higher before she started taking the supplements Natto Kinase and Lumbrakinase.
