JD Snowfire Round 2

Got back to this project today. Figured it would be fun to take a spin with the 8 inches of snow we got today. Started with compression test. Cold and dry both sides made 120-125 psi. No issues there I don’t think. Pulled carb off and inspected, but didn’t crack it open as I didn’t have any gaskets. Put it back in following all the service manual guidelines. Did get it to start and idle after it warmed up and some minor carb tweaking. Didn’t have manifold gaskets so I didn’t pull them for a proper leak down test. However I did hit the accessible seal with a spray of starting fluid while running and it had no impact, so they must not be totally blown out. A few hours of tinkering and trying to run in the snow just bounced back and forth between too little and not enough fuel. It’s been a few years since I’ve battled a Mikuni, but it seems a rebuild is in order. Time to look for parts I guess. Picture this time. Not a tractor, but a two cylinder Deere anyway.

My Dad had one too, us boys had a blast on that thing for many years. Up until then we had a '72 Ski-Doo and a 60's something Evinrude, liked those sleds too, the Trailfire just ran, didn't break down much.

If it is the diaphragm pumper type they tend to harden up and need a rebuild every few years.

My guess would be the fuel pump needs new diaphragms. Make sure the needle and seat in the carb is not all gummed up and sticky.

I replaced the fuel pump last season. Did not resolve these issues at the time, but does seem to pump very consistently. I’m thinking something plugged up in the carb.
